Constant access violation crashes

The last one was during a cinematic… had 7 crashes in 24 hours, and lots of time wasted (escort quest reset,) scenario reset after reloading… any hints?

Howdy Twizter,

Access violations often happen when there is a conflict with another program. Try closing all other programs temporarily and test WoW by itself.

It doesn’t matter. I have an open ticket with Support that hasn’t gotten a reply yet. I’ve had over 50 crashes just today and they are all reproduceable. Seat of the Primus crashes the game instantly, riding the FP from Maldraxxus to Oribos and vice versa sometimes causes a crash, and the intro area for Revendreth, if you look West, it crashes.

A full game reinstall didn’t help. Closed every single running app on my PC, disabled XMP, removed my CPU OC, disabled every single addon, and the crashes still occur at the exact same places each time. There’s over 300MB worth of error logs in my WoW folder just from today.

I spent a good 3 hours just flying from Mal to Oribos over and over today, disabling 1 add on at a time, closing each running program at a time, 1 BIOS setting at a time, cos every 2 flights is a guaranteed crash.

Could you try testing the default version of WoW without any addons by doing a UI reset? Even if they are disabled they can still cause weird issues.

I will try this now. Would it then be safe to copy the contents of the Interface and WTF folder after testing and it no longer crashes? No WTF folder would mean every single addon has to be redone.

Yeah you can copy the contents and put them in another folder somewhere else or rename the WTF, Interface and Cache folders by adding .old to the end of the folder names.

I mean, how would I go about reinstalling all my addons and settings? Since those are in the WTF folder, and I’m assuming that some part of the crashing can be attributed to files in the WTF folder? Now that the renaming is done and the new folders have been recreated by the game, nothing is installed.

So TLDR, if these 3 folders were the issue, I would not be able to copy my old WTF folder with all my addon settings and paste it into the new WTF folder, cos that would just end up being the same issue as before right?

If the errors persist then we can conclude that the addons in those folders weren’t causing the errors and you can just copy the contents back. If the errors stop, then it’s possible one addon or a combination of addons was causing the issue. In that case, you would want to copy them one at a time and retest the game to see if there’s any change.

Thank you. However, since no addons were loaded in my original testing, wouldn’t it be fair to assume that no addon WTF files were loaded during the game? Would that mean it was never an addon issue anyway? It’s been about 5-10 mins now without a crash with the newly generated folders.

For some reason I have only got these errors whenever a big patch releases on retail wow, first time was when the Shadowlands pre patch came out I was crashing every 15 mins on wow classic. I fixed it by resetting my UI and re downloading all addons then never had a problem until now after Shadowlands has released. Crashing every 10-15 mins again…

Try deleting/renaming your Cache folder in either retail/classic depending on which you’re playing. That fixed it for me.

Samfisher,

Not quite! This is actually a pretty common misconception. Addons and the like can throw bad data into your WTF/Cache folders. Other things can cause it too over extended play sessions, messing with settings/console variables, or just getting some buggy data from a hiccup in the game or server data itself cached.

In either case, it doesn’t matter if an addon is active or not. Even while disabled, and addon still exists in a unloaded state. Even if the addon has been updated and fully disengages with your UI, the data in WTF/Cache may still be there. The reason we have people remove addon managers/addons at the same time as deleting those folders is actually to prevent the bad data from returning to prepare for the possibility that an addon is out of date, corrupted, or incompatible with another addon. The most reliable way to get rid of all of the possibilities of a UI issue is just to purge it all, and especially now when we’re so busy, we want y’all to be handled ASAP so you can enjoy the new content.

How have things been since? Do you need any more help with this?

So far the crashes have stopped! I tried my luck and copying over my WTF and Interface folder to see if maybe, just maybe, only the Cache folder was problematic, and it was! So I got to keep all my addon settings and the game only had to rebuild the Cache folder, which was basically instant at launch anyway! Thank you!

I encountered this error after my Windows 10 PC installed the April 2021 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 20H2. It is pretty annoying, I have tried some of the suggestions in this thread and they have all failed to fix it, I have also tried running the scan and repair install option in the launcher menu as well.
