If you try to use Conqueror’s Astral Varnish on a Manaforge Omega tier set piece that was already put through the catalyst, you get an error that says: “That item cannot be modified.”
The worst part is that there’s zero way to know this until AFTER you’ve used your charge. No warning anywhere saying you’re about to waste your charge if you plan on using a Varnish or Lacquer.
Please fix this ASAP.
EDIT: This has been fixed! I just used a Varnish on my converted M+ chestpiece. Thank you devs!

Same, I cata’d a piece from the Delver’s Bounty and can’t add the Conq Astral Varnish to it… I think this happened last season and was eventually fixed so hopefully we can get it fixed soon.
Mine’s still bugged. I converted a hero track shoulder into tier. Tried to use the conqueror’s astral lacquer on it, and it just says “that item cannot be modified”
Same bug when trying to use the varnish on a catalyzed piece of Timewalking Ulduar gear that I got from the weekly quest reward chest.
This is bugged for me as well. Tried last night and still not working this morning on a pair of Champion level gloves
Even after the hotfix, the Lacquer isn’t working on my catalyzed shoulders. It doesn’t have an error code like OP, it simply shows the shoulders not available, shaded, when I right click on the Lacquer.
Still not fixed on all items and isn’t working on my hero helm that I cata’d.
Journal update: day 3 . The bugs continue to gain strength. My gloves continue to repel the application of Lacquers after repeated attempts and log ins. No hope is in sight…
Maybe Blizz is trying to break the fourth wall here and infest us with “bugs” that portends the coming of the Old Gods.

The Zug. It beats to the rhythm of my heart. A heart yearning to make use of these shoulders in battle. The Zug has spoken. The Zug must be answered. This pesky hunter with his incessant beasts is in my clutches. Death thralls are starting to overtake him. The Zug. I take my shoulders out of my pack and start to pulverize his face with them. Bashing. Bashing. Yes. The fury is on me. This frustratingly useless lacquer I take from my pocket and shove it into his squealing, salivating mouth. Hunters make a lot of noise when they die.
The battle is won yet I hang my head in defeat. The Zug. It is not satisfied. The shoulders must be worn with the lacquer. A way must be found.

For anyone interested in giving this a try, it did not work for me: I opened a ticket with Blizzard and received this response (after the usual automated responses) -
“1. Delete CurseForge or WoW Matrix if you have them installed.
2. Close WoW if it’s still running.
3. Head to your World of Warcraft folder (look for -Retail_ or choose Classic if it happens there). (Shortcut: Right-click the WoW icon, choose Open File Location)
4. Delete these two folders: WTF, Cache.
5. Rename Interface to Interface.old (This keeps your addons safe but takes them out of the game temporarily for testing).”

Still not working for me as well. Opened a support ticket when I first tried. GM responded telling me that my catalyzed gear doesn’t scale up because it’s PvE Gear. The ticket was SPECIFICALLY about the astral varnish and lacquer not working to scale up catalyzed PvE gear. Do GMs even understand their own game systems?
