Confused about Prot Warrior rotation (Devastator)

I am returning to Prot, and the last time I played it was BFA. The Devastator talent has me a bit confused, since this was really the “filler” spell that was the rage builder.

Are there just times that you aren’t pressing any buttons at all, and just let auto-attacks happen?

Prot is the highest APM spec in the game.

There’s always something to press.

Yes, but rarely unless you specifically have to pool a lot of rage for a mechanic. You have Shield Slam and Thunder Clap as generators, and you will still get a constant stream of Shield Slam resets. You’ll also occasionally get free Revenges.

Outside of that, you have 45s+ cooldowns also on the GCD that don’t cost rage (and generate it in most cases).

If you don’t have rage for extended periods of time then your haste is too low. Additionally, there are plenty of buttons to press when you don’t have rage.

If you have gaps in your rotation you are playing with barbaric training. Hint, you shouldn’t be.

So should I be using devastate at all or in limited circumstances?

At the moment whilst leveling I’m swimming in rage and not taking a lot of damage so I can kinda spam it to up my dps.

Instead of spending rage on devastate should I be spending it on ignore pain or something like that?

I have zero times i am pressing nothing lol. I am ALWAYS spamming and hitting a button.

What do you press if you’re starved on rage?

You never should be rage starved, but if you manage to do so, hit shield slam asap or leap away and charge back in to get some rage.

I just realized I said devestate when I actually meant revenge.

Are you all using this often?

It’s your 4-piece bonus. You’ll be using it a lot and healing for a boatload.

Shield slam and thunder clap.
