Confused about crest trading

So the progression of crests is Gilded>Runed>Carved>Weathered…

But the vendor/trade system seems backwards… like costing gilded to buy runed, runed to buy carved…

Please help my head on this…

Those conversions are to obtain crests past their current seasonal caps. Once you completely outgrow the use of a crest you’ll be able to “trade up” and convert in the opposite direction. That’s what those harbinger of the x achievements represent.

Transmuting crests work both ways: You can downgrade higher crests to lower ones, or you can convert up to a class higher. Converting up requires you to hit Ilvl thresholds, and always costs more crests to upgrade as opposed to downgrade.

I believe the thresholds are 629, 645, and 658.

The conversion goes both ways. You can upgrade a lower crest into a higher one and you can also down grade a higher one into a lower tier version.

Yeah I was confused too. You unlock the upward trades after you reach a certain item level breakpoint on ALL your gear slots. It would be great if the vendor had those crest packages visible but just red/unobtainable with an explanatory description.

I swear that they changed this, and now if you’re capped on teh type of crest you’re trying to upgrade to it says something like “you can’t receive (x) crest”. Am I crazy?

Trading down (Like from Gilded to Runed) would ignore the cap on Runed but trading up (Runed to Gilded) still obeys the cap on Gilded.

I can see it being handy if you’re just barely able to get any Runed crests and still need to upgrade Vet gear or something. If you’re only getting, like, a trickle of Runed putting that to something you can actually use in a reasonable timeframe can be more beneficial.

It’s real niche, but does have a purpose!

2x the crests than sparks for crafted gear
Gilded drops from 6-9
Hero drops from 6-9

If youre not routinely running 10s for vault, 60 gilded crests a week being downgraded = more upgrades
