Concern with Conqueror’s Prized Varnish and Conqueror’s Prized Lacquer

Developers’ notes: These new consumables allow players to avoid having to choose between catalyzing PvP and PvE armor. For example, a player could acquire a Hero-track chestpiece from Mythic+, convert it into their class set armor at the Catalyst, and then purchase a Conqueror’s Prized Varnish to reach the same PvP item level that they would receive from purchasing and converting a Prized Gladiator’s Leather Vest for the same Conquest and Catalyst costs. Please note that armor upgraded in this way maintains its PvE origin and so cannot be socketed with a Prized Jeweler’s Setting.

Now this sounds like an interesting idea, but I’m very concerned about set bonuses. Recently blizzard has been nerfing set bonuses in PvP by 50%, so when combined with the lower item level they are less appealing in PvP. Now this change will remove the lower item level, meaning you can have a PvP ilvl while also having a set bonus.

THIS WILL MAKE PVE SET BONUSES OBLIGATORY FOR PVP!

The fact you are gaining some power for this set bonus instead of no power from a normal PvP piece means all players will be required to farm PvE set bonuses to compete in PvP.

A few potential fixes for this issue could be:
-Make set bonuses not work in PvP (0% instead of 50%)
-Make all the PvP gear have the PvE set bonus so players only doing PvP won’t be left behind in PvP ← They already did this one
-Make PvP item level boost and PvE set bonuses mutually exclusive
-Make new PvP set bonuses exclusively for PvP so there is a trade off to using your PvE set bonus in PvP, as you would lose the new PvP set bonus.

What are you saying? We will be converting PvP conquest items at the calayst to PvP tier bonuses just like we did this tier.

The PvE tier that we could convert will automatically be nerfed in PvP. Right now set bonuses are only nerfed when you activate PvP combat, it does not matter if you have a PvE or PvP piece equipped, once you are in pvp combat, all PvP modifiers are applied which includes tier set nerfs. You can equip a 4 set right now that is from catalyzed conquest pieces and the set will not be nerfed until you are in pvp combat. Same as right now, if you equip a PvE piece, it is automatically nerfed once you enter pvp combat.

There are no gains for PvPers to get PvE pieces next patch. What they mean by “PvE origin” is that you won’t be able to use PvP sockets on it because you got it from PvE content. They did that so PvE’rs would not feel forced to grind PvP sockets and the PvP catalyst item since you can get PvP sockets much faster than PvE sockets. It does not mean the tier set is at 100% power in PvP, all PvP modifiers will still apply.

Well, I’m an idiot. Didn’t even know what the catalyst was let alone that you could use it on PvP gear right now, shows what happens when you quit for a few expansions and try and come back.
