Computer Shutdowns and Restarts While Playing

Hey there,

Recently after replacing my All-In-One liquid cooling system, I’ve been noticing that while World of Warcraft is running, my CPU tends to work extra hard every minute or so for about three seconds and then wind back down to a more regular load.

Due to this, it will occasionally force my computer to either shut down or restart at random intervals during game play. To note, this does not happen at any other point during normal computer usage, only when World of Warcraft is running and I’m logged in. It also seems to have correlated with 9.1 but I can’t be sure.

Normal running temperature even after the replacement is about 50-60 degrees C during gameplay. Spikes from the CPU tend to send CPU temps up into the mid-70’s which I understand is normal for running a game under load and so don’t understand why my system would need to shut down.

Any and all help would be appreciated. Currently am using Speccy to check temps and other hardware related numbers. I have also double-checked that it isn’t a system restart due to Windows Updates and the dates also don’t seem to correlate.

Hi Kyede

Run a HWMonitor test here:

Download HWMonitor here:

Free download is along the left side of page - called “Setup - English”

Open it on desktop - go play for a few minutes fight some mobs then tab out. Take a screenshot of the tool. Scroll down on tool to get the rest of the outputs then take another screenshot.

Upload those to Imgur or a similar site. I use http://postimages.org/

(Remove the beginning of the URL link to post on the forum - the http portion should work - or paste the link in chatbox then highlight it - click the preformatted text button along top of chat box - looks like this </>)

Hey Kyede,

Those temperatures aren’t very concerning at all so I don’t think the temperatures would be the cause of the shutdowns. Shutdowns and restarts can also be caused by power spikes, for example if the power spike is tripping the safety in the power supply or motherboard. So if the temperatures look fine you may look into possible power supply issues.

We don’t have a lot we can recommend for shutdowns and restarts since it is outside of our scope of support, but we have a bit of info on this article:

Computer Restarts or Shuts Down While Playing a Blizzard Game

Thank you both. I’ll be taking this feedback to my computer service technician to see if they have anything further to say.

Hi again Kyede

As Jambrix mentions these sudden shutdowns are typically power supply or temperature related. In your case it seems temperatures are good. I wanted to see the HWMonitor while the game was running to confirm that. Especially since the cooling system was recently replaced. The HWMonitor may give some clues as to the power state as well.

The PC Technician should have a tool to test the power supply. It isn’t unusual for those to pack it in.

When your computer shuts down or restarts your hwmon data is lost so you can never be sure how hot your CPU got. You only have to be a fraction out with your reseating of the CPU, heatsink and fan for your CPU temps to spike too high (100c +) forcing a shutdown ( I’ve done it myself).

Also too much thermal paste is a common error ( only need a pea size drop in the center ).

The restarts (not shutdowns) are more likely to be driver related.

A good way to test your system would be to run some benchmarks (sisoft Sandra) that will stress your CPU too.

Also what Jambrix (blue) said double check for any loose components (graphics card) after liquid cooling removal.

I recently replaced my AIO liquid cooling system and had a hard restart due to temps getting too high. The case was hot to the touch and the system was reading 81 C after restart. In these cases, the system has reverted back to 40-50 C after restarts which is normal running temp for my system recently.

As an update, I recently had another restart - this time when WoW had not been launched so it doesn’t appear that the game itself is causing the issues. I do still occasionally hear my fan spinning up due to CPU temps growing warmer about every minute (give or take) when playing which is still curious.

I recently became aware of another issue which possibly may be affecting the 32gb sims a bit more than smaller simms and that is the issue of bit flipping which can make your system restart for no apparent reason.

You can put any link you like between backquotes, the ones on the tilde (“~”) key, at any trust level. Won’t be clickable (that’s just for trust level 3), but at least folks don’t need to edit out dot, dot, dot, etc.
