Computer freezes and needs reboot at Character Select screen

Note: I filed a ticket saying the below, but I also wanted to bring up a forum post in case others are having the same problem. Thank you for any help that any of you might be able to give.

After prepatch, whenever I pull up the game, it attempts to load the new warbands character select, I see the character menu on the right, the new menu at the top, and the information on the left (like about Remix and the like), and everything else is solid black. I’m unable to click on anything, and after a couple of minutes my computer will turn off.

I have tried all the troubleshooting I could think of. Uninstalled all addons, pulled up WOW without being logged in to Battle.net so that I could crank all the settings down to minimal, uninstalled and reinstalled WOW, made sure WOW was the only program running at the time, updated my computer’s software, made sure I have plenty of free storage space, etc.

Computer Details:

  • Mac Mini 2018
  • Processor: 3.2 GHz 6-Core Intel Core i7
  • Graphics: Intel UHD Graphics 630 1536 MB
  • Memory: 8 GB 2667 MHz DDR4
  • macOS: Sonoma 14.5

I was able to play WOW before the patch just fine. Sure there would be a couple of times where if there was a LOT going on on-screen at the time (example: 30-man MSV, fighting Elegon, everyone letting off their biggest attacks on pull) it might briefly freeze, worst case if I’ve been playing a while and my computer is hot, it might freeze and need a restart, but that’s rare and I was able to play with graphics better than the potato settings they’re at right now for sure.

Is there a way for me to turn off the warbands menu? Or to login straight to a character and skip the menu? Or is this a known issue that will be fixed? Playing WOW is really important to me, I’m disabled and don’t have many things in my life that bring me joy, but I have WOW. I’ve had WOW off and on since vanilla, and I love the game so much. I really need to be able to play it, and I don’t have money for a new computer since I am disabled and unable to work. I’d appreciate any help that you all could offer me. Please.

I am also facing this issue, also a Mac user (M1 Max). Even after disabling all add-ons, the game loads in but other players don’t load. I can see chat messages, but not people. It then crashes within five minutes.

I have the same problem, I get disconnected on the character selection screen, I opened a ticket and the response was null. I opened another one again, and I hope there is a solution. I saw that other people are having the same problem.

I’ve uninstalled WOW again, and this time I’m installing a trial period of Parallels with Windows. I’ll be redownloading WOW overnight onto the new Windows install to see if it really is a problem with my machine, or if it’s a Mac problem as I suspect it is (since the two others in this thread have had problems, and I’ve seen other Mac users with severe problems since the latest patch as well). I’ll report my results in the morning.

@Nephirithos Some reports I found are from Windows too, but if you get results, let us know xD

The results are: I can login to any character I want and play just fine–in theory.

What actually happens is that, no matter my settings, everything is black and blue? I can see parts of some other toons in the world, parts of some of the environment, but just as I’ve seen some other Mac users report, everything is strangely black and blue no matter the character I login to, and it really is unplayable like this.

SOLUTION:

After uninstalling WOW (again), Windows and Parallels, I decided one more time to try to install and run WOW. Even though I’ve uninstalled and reinstalled it twice already, and this will be the THIRD time doing so. But this time I did all but wipe my computer clean to factory settings. I went through and removed every trace of WOW and battle.net. I removed all games (except for SDV and MTG:A since they’re small and I do play them), I removed all programs that I don’t need/no longer use. I cleaned out my application support folder of any MENTION of a blizzard program. My computer has an extra 40GB (even with WOW reinstalled) on it somehow that it didn’t have before.

Reinstalled WOW, started the game without being logged into Battle.net, so I could set all my graphics settings to the absolute bare minimum. Logged in, and it sputtered for a moment but I logged into my main, and everything looked–fine? I set my graphics to where they were before patch, and everything loaded no problem. Went back to the new character select/warbands screen (which was still blank when I first pulled the game up, I used the list to login to my main) and lo and behold, it loads immediately, no hiccups, I can see and customize my warband.

Everything works now!

So TL;DR, I will emphasize this: JUST a uninstall/reinstall does NOT work. You have to get rid of all trace of WOW/Battle.net/Blizzard after uninstall, and THEN a reinstall will work.

Ah man, got excited and tried this, but unfortunately, it didn’t work for me. I now got the cinematic, which made me think it was working, but once I logged in, had the same issue of no characters appearing and then the whole computer bricking.

Hoping another solution pops up!

Has anyone else managed to resolve this issue? Will today’s update fix this issue?

Nope. Still not resolved for me. I even tried to downgrade to Ventura (did the steps wrong and wiped my macbook — thankfully had everything backed up!) and it’s still not working after reinstalling.
