Don’t know why this keeps coming up but no, FF14 isn’t down for 24 hours for every major content patch. Latest big patch was on Jan 9th for 6.3, servers were scheduled to be down from 6PM to 2AM PST. They ended maintenance at 1.15 AM PST so 45 minutes early.
Only times the game is down for 24 hours is when there is something major to put out. Like new datacenter with new servers for the NA region. Those were longer maintenances yes.
Also as a side note, FF14 treats any maintenance with less than 24 hour notice an emergency. The maintenance yesterday (Feb 1st) was only for instance servers so you couldn’t run dungeons or whatnot. Game servers were live. That one lasted for two hours. All easily seen on their website.
not ashamed to admit i’m one of them, he’s such a likeable and humble guy. wasnt it at EW’s launch when he issued an apology video or something and actually started crying because he was so ashamed it went that badly?
Last major patch was on January 9th for FF14. Maintenance was scheduled for 8 hours and ended 45 minutes early. There most certainly are not 24 hour maintenances for every major content patch. Last one I remember was to implement a new datacenter for NA (so hardware). And before new expansions there is 24 hours of downtime yes. But for sure not for every major patch.
It is generally reported that Yoshi does not believe in maintenance and would not put his players lives in jeopardy by committing such an act of terrorism.
But to be fair 6.3 did break things in a pretty bad way. They changed some netcode which wound up just making the game unplayable for a good bit. Everything was freezing up left and right and then catching back up. And with higher latency some classes are just dropping abilities, they aren’t going off (even now after they fixed things.
It took them a couple days to figure out a fix and there was another maintenance on the 12th to fix/revert what was broken. That one was scheduled for 4 hours (called emergency maintenance with 20 hours of notice) but it ended 40 minutes early.
That really is the thing I prefer, the communication. They are more likely to overestimate how much time they need and then bring servers up early than the other way around. And that makes for happier players overall.
Lol not necessarily.
But FF14 is still a large game.
Incompetence is not an excuse.
More code means more possibilities to have a failure, so it has nothing to do with incompetence, just saying. It does have to do with probability.
That being said, WoW is a significantly larger game.
The fact that every continent is one single massive zone.
While most other MMO’s have loading screens between zones.
Heck, even in the cities you can’t even go from an upper level to a lower level without going through a loading screen in FFXIV. Everything is instanced.
WoW has a lot of stuff that can bug out.
But it’s very rarely the old stuff that bugs out.
It’s their new systems, such as the Trading Post (which is the reason for 2 additional maintenances), or new class changes.
Soooooo… the excuse that WoW is so old and large etc. isn’t a valid one.
Log in Tuesday while kid is at school and I happen to have the day off. “oh tuesday mx… ok, no playing until after bedtime”
“wed mx…? ok guess no playing until after bedtime”
“'thursday mx from 7-12pm…?? ok guess no playing for me today”
This is the only mmo that often frustrates me with maintenance.
Your excuses defending Blizzard are bad. It’s a big game old game? ok instance old content or new content, work on wow 2 instead of the 20th expansion… do anything an intelligent person would do when there’s an inconvenience in your service based company.
“entitled” ? People are “entitled” to value their limited time, I agree.
What should we call people who think defending the establishment’s status quo and wanting anyone complaining to keep it to themselves?
I know the mx will continue and I will continue to play (when able…) but how about You keep it to yourself when others inquire or complain about downtime that seems excessive for a paid service.
