Community is Toxic

So I took a break for a few months and wanted to see the state of PVP. After a few matches I see not much has changed, but scanning these forums I see something I realize has changed a lot over the years. Everyone is just so mean to each other. Every post either starts or ends in an insult on these forums. Everyone is so passionately blind by their own opinions that they simply seem incapable of sympathy or understanding of any kind. How is Activision Blizzard ever supposed to do anything to balance or fix anything if it is measured by this insanely toxic community. Hats off to the forum moderators and community managers. You have a full time job.

You know what, as I was scanning the forums this morning and responses I had a similar thought.

There are so many replies to posts that are either trolls or just jumping in for the sake of arguing and belittling someone without anything meaningful to add to the conversation.

There’s nothing wrong with having a different opinion to someone else, but if your satisfaction is derived from spitting vitriol at others and you’ve got half a heart, think about helping steering the forums to a more respectful place.

This community was never the best. Most of the people playing now aren’t in that original group of old school players who came from the MMOs that came before Vanilla. What you’re seeing is the people who were teenagers back then. They’re the ones who started the modern online gaming culture.

The real question is why any of us thought this would be any different that all the other gaming communities.

Actually, now that I think about it, it really is different in the game. I always see people answering questions or generally being friendly. Could be that PvE servers attract a more laid back crowd however.

welcome to the world where a ‘block’ feature can build that echo chamber and surround you with your viewpoint only.

You see. You’re the exact type of person Im talking about. You have no point here except to try and cause stress on someone. I am in an amazing guild that let me roll on gear even as a Ret paladin. They genuinly seem to care a great deal for each other. Its awesome to see. I have zero issues with my group. I am just amazed by this community overall.

Well, my memory’s fuzzy but it seems like the general discussion forum was a complaint forum in 2006 as well. Vocal minority and all that. Though it’s possible the venom was to a lesser degree.

Thanks for the replies. I think the advent of social media lets people treat each other like crap without repercussions for their actions. Hiding behind an online profile creates a world where people no longer have to debate their ideas in a professional way. Now they can crap on you and have zero fear. Original classic did not have FACEBOOK for instance…

I do think social media’s played a role in the Internet being… louder now. If it’s any consolation your server seems like it has a great community.

every other thread was

  • is wow too addicting?
  • nerf warlocks!
  • is wow dead?
  • sex leg

Civility on any forum where people can be anonymous is extrodinarily rare. It would be wonderful if civility was the norm. Probably the best way to encourage civility is to simply ignore the rude and reply to the civil  There is no satisfaction for a troll unless they can see they are getting under someones skin.

I noticed everyone is contrary to be contrary. Too many toons I see posting just to post with nothing of substance other than, “ Look at me!”

It’s sad I recognize so many posters because they reply in every topic.

Don’t go to any internet forum looking for rationality or decency. You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy (man I’m killing it with the movie references today. Must be good day!)

I blame Classic.

It was built to foster Toxicity.

The forums have always been a cesspool of negativity. What’s changed is how short the posts are today. It’s like people have lost all ability to read/write anything longer than a paragraph.

These forums badly need some way of sorting-by-likes, similar to Reddit/Facebook. Or at the very least, putting rate limits on people who post something every other minute.

This pretty much sums up his point.

This has less to do with anyone having hurt feelings and more about people unable to act like decent human beings.

It’s always been that way on the forums nothing new there. I played back in vanilla and used to read the forums a lot and was reading the night Tseric melted down.

It has always been that way, but these forums represent a very small portion of the actual playerbase.

The new meta is the min/max Classic forum rep grind. Minimize detailed arguments while maximizing insults. I blame the sweaties.
