It’s pretty clear that you can simply straight buy rank 3 without any pre-reqs (aside from your main having unlocked rank 3 of that essence).
Mmhmm, thought as much. Just being tolld differently by some guildies, so thought I’d check.
It’s not a compromise, it’s a reaction to a drop in subscription numbers and an effort to stem the bleeding.
You? You mean, the entire community?
Ion - “Accountwide essences are off the table…”
^ That is an obstinate child not listening to the people who play the game and a subscription. It’s pretty commonplace where people raise concerns and vocalize their opinions to change the mind of a company. Foods, drinks, shows, movies and literally everything people pay for the people buying that service will want things done their way… It’s like a chef refusing to reduce the salt in his food and everyone stopping because he refuses to change.
That’s a nice narrative you got there; but, in all honesty it appears to “me” it’s a spiteful response. The subjective “earning” essences is a wall for the sake of a wall. It’s now a smaller wall, does that make it more tolerable for you? Again, this would have been a fine approach at launch in 8.2, a compromise at 8.3 launch and a reluctant or begrudging appeasement to stem the losses for self-interest.
Perhaps, (and this is just my opinion), you should consider yourself a customer and not just a fanboy so easily appeased with a pacification. It’s a ridiculous wall that was NOT FUN, NOT INTERESTING and A WAY TO PERPETUATE something for your money FULL STOP.
Time is the most valuable commodity. Forgive me if “I” don’t agree with you in how I want to spend it. Yes, I like their game. No, I don’t want to have a second job to just “replay” that content. No, I don’t have to pay for it or play them or any of that. I think that’s all that the community is saying, "we’ve done your meaningless content to do the content we want to do, please don’t punish us just for playing your game.
My “time” played shouldn’t be a metric to their investors, the fact that I’m subscribing is enough.
They just released the full details, which confirm that it’s straight purchases.
They did, however, balance it so that a character must do a fair amount of stuff to get more than one essence per week, and even getting one per week requires doing a decent amount.
You need 500 Echoes per essence. Doing your 3 invasions per week is 275, Horrific Visions are 50-150 depending on how many bonus objectives you do. LFR is another 100 if you complete all 4 wings, clearing the place on normal+ is 180-300 depending on difficulty. Clearing a 15 M+ is 345 (45 from the clear, 300 from the weekly chest). Emissaries are 50 each (so 350 per week available).
So if you’re doing a lot of stuff on your alt, you can get 2 in a week, maybe even 3. Doing just the 3 invasions, 3 of the 4 wings of LFR (since the final wing is still a metric pain, with LFR being what it is), and 3 of the 7 Emissaries is enough to get a single essence, which isn’t that much effort (though it is still effort, which will annoy some). If you do the other 4 essences, some Visions, and maybe a mid key or some PvP or some normal bosses, you can get 2 in a week without too much trouble.
Or PVP gear? Or flying at max level?
Check it out now,!
So they found a way to screw up again…
This should be hotfixed to require any essence to unlock all other role essences on account, just like Nazjatar/Rustbolt essences.
Why you Blizzard spit into the face of all those who mains pure DPS classes?
Its only rank 3 - you mean the highest level of essence that has an effect on the game. Yes I do pay for the ability to play this game ‘like a job’. I work 40hrs a week (predominantly from home but otherwise 5 mins away from work). My financee is 3.5 hrs away, my family and friends are further. I have 40 hrs a week to play. If they kept on giving me everything I wouldn’t have anything to do now would I? Its an MMO, you not supposed to get the full experience playing 5 hrs a week. I’m tired of losers who come in a think however small amount of time they play the game should be the ‘correct’ amount. They do a pretty damn good job of giving the people who play day and night something to do, whilst also giving progression to those that play 5 hrs a week.
I also dont require my alts to have bis everything. I’m not a moron.
A relevant update to the list of ways to get Echoes of Ny’alotha:
So… the character we logged into first is now our official main, which will not accrue any echoes. All of our other toons will accrue them. This still hasn’t been clearly stated. We’ve only been given half an explanation of your new system, and only after it went live. Now, people are stuck with a non-main, main. What a debacle.
This system is no different from pathfinder 2. If you have it completed on any of them, you get credit (flying) on the entire account. Just make it simple and recode mother to work along those rules. Would it be so terrible if a main was able to get some of this currency? Give them a means to buy an unearned rank 4 once they’ve saved up an ungodly amount of it. Shadowlands is around the corner. All of this will be tossed in the trash any way. Save yourself some PR and loosen up.
I don’t think that’s how it works. As soon as any toon with rank 3 essences logs in, your account should be flagged to earn the currency on every toon on the account. I fully expect that when I log in on my hunter and actually do currency-granting content, she’ll get echoes just like my other toons.
That is not correct based on my experience. If your main is not getting echoes, that sounds like a bug. I did read that I had to log in my toon(s) with rank 3 essences first before my account would be flagged for echoes, so that’s what I did. My warrior main actually got some echoes to purchase the rank 3 tank mechagon essence. I currently have the rank 3 dps and rank 2 tank mechagon essences on him.
EDIT: it’s possible that you might not get echoes at all if your main has all of the rank 3 essences that you’ve earned on any toon for any role available for that class? That’s a guess on my part since my warrior apparently has 1 rank of 1 essence to go.
I hope you’re right. Right now, my main isn’t getting any and can’t even get the vendor option from mother. I got a M+ chest this morning. I did an emissary quest and killed some bossed in nyalotha. No echoes. If this is all a bug, then I hope they fix it quick. I have a bad feeling this was intended, since it’s a catch-up mechanic.
I did log into my main first (fortunately). My other characters are receiving echoes.
That’s possible. I will have to check my toons. I know my alts have some rank 3 essences but might be the same as my main.
If this is the case, they should still let mains collect the echoes, even if there’s nothing currently to spend them on, to give players the latitude to earn different essences on different characters. Waiting until I earn it on a character before I can begin earning seems a bit draconian.
It was mostly to head off the inevitable “my main has all the currency and no possible way to spend it” complaints.
But Taco’s inference is correct. Characters should only be able to see Echoes drop if you have logged in on another character that has earned a rank-3 essence that he first has not. If your main has has everything already at rank 3 that any of your other characters has earned at rank 3 (like Crucible), your main will be unable to get Echoes, as they have nothing to spend them on. The relative edge case of earning R3’s separately on different toons wasn’t accounted for, mostly because there’s not much reason to do it (very few, if any, essences have mutually-exclusive grinds, so you could very likely grind the R3 just as fast on your main as your alt).
My feedback; Game is not fun with the timegates, the massive grinds, the extreme amount of different currencies, the bloated systems stacked ontop of eachother, the procc-rng is practically playing the game rather than the person.
I’m finding myself frustrated and tired, uninterested and unmotivated to play more than ever due to it all.
Stacking HoA -> Essences (not acc wide btw) -> Azerite -> Corruption -> Corruption Tier -> Cloak -> Grind Currencies -> RNG wheter everything happens, with RNG elements ontop of said RNG elements… Is not fun, imo.
I can fire 1 moonfire; it can procc 11-14 different things - or nothing at all.
It’s not me playing anymore, its the game.
Then we have the random bugs and lag going on, but that’s a whole other page of issues.
This is my beef. My rogues doesn’t even have much in the way of corruption effects, but I added it up the other day, and over a third of his damage is coming from item effects (essences, non-spec traits, corruption, trinkets, etc). On characters with better corruption, I’ve seen individual corruption effects doing >30% of the toon’s damage, meaning item effects are likely doing >50% of their total damage.
As you say, we’re not playing the game anymore, the game is playing the game for us. We’ve lost so much agency over our damage, our gear, our progression. It’s really killing my interest as well.
I gotta regrind on a druid to get the tank and healer essences >.> thanks blizz.
It’s not really one essence per week. I am about 2.5 essences on this alt and it has less than 24 hours /played at 120 lvl. If you have an alt and you know which essences you need the most, you can get most of them from the currency you get from quests and vision runs (which you have to do anyway to bring it up to speed).
You necro’d this post!
To be fair, he necro’d it with a month’s worth of experience to report.
I’ve also gotten around 2-3 essences mostly passively. While I’m still a bit cross that the system requires grinding to use, I admit that it’s mostly turned out to be a non-issue, and there’s at least some feeling of reward when I’ve gotten enough of the Echoes to purchase a highly desirable essence for one of my specs (like Visions for my balance druid, or Lucid for my fire mage). Sure saves grinding them from the original source, especially since I can get a fair number of Echoes just by doing the occasional LFR wing, item-rewarding emissary, invasion, and the handful of visions I do on them.
