I truly do believe that one of the larger issues with wow at the moment is just combat itself. Classes how they feel and play and how we fight mobs. I think it was a huge mistake removing mobility and simplifying class gameplay. Some people like simple things and they use to have classes and specs for their taste now everything is so baseline and depthless
That being said, if you look at new rpg games like black desert and how combat works, I don’t think wow has kept up to date and by simplifying a tab target combat system (old) every single xpac since wod has made the game bland… not only that, I think having mobs that have dodgable attacks that will actually kill you if u don’t watch out in solo world content would be beneficial. Wow is such an easy game i use to do world quests while watching netflicks, hardly looking at the screen even mythics and raids… no point dodging, no real interesting combat outside of a basic 4 button Rotations, no reactive abilities or interesting utility required throughout all of the leveling and most of the end game experience outside of raiding.
Even without having difficult encounters in non raid content and having easy boring npcs that don’t demand interaction with abilities. The combat needs some juice, easy to pick up and hard to master. Lots of popular games use this, from apex, league, fortnite etc… It’s not a bad thing if some people like depth, even outside of the rotation like the little things… like being a warrior you use to be able to intervene and spell reflect on cc targeted at allies… there use to be all these little things we could do with abilities outside of our rotation to increase our performance… I miss it so much. The game is just so dam boring and I am looking at all these classes and it makes me so sad to see the game not change but get worse over the years for most classes.
Look at how difficult some of the new games are to master… myself and others have been playing this for decades… simplifying classes and keeping the same combat with npcs is really getting old.
hi thank you for the post. While I agree much of the casual content can be done watching netflix on a second monitor I disagree that their aren’t challenges out there for those that seek it.
Stuff I do while watching netflix: fishing. rep farming, maybe islands or world quests.
While I agree there are abilities that I do miss i feel like classes still have decent utility to use.
Something I notice is that in smaller group content since legion although our toolkits have become a bit smaller since MOP the amount of mechanics that you need to be aware of in high end m+ is quite a bit. the devs seem to be focusing more attention on having many different meaningful encounter mechanics throughout the game. if your goal is to time +15’s across the board there are really a lot of mechanics to memorize in all 10 dungeons while not fatal in a +0 they will easily cause wipes on high keys if not handled properly.
also you talk about utility on your warrior. If you like utility I would encourage you to try out retribution pally. word of glory is very strong especially when wings are up and can heal almost the full party to full in one cast. there is of course bop, freedom LoH, stun kick repent and maybe flash of light too. keeping track of when to use all these things in high keys, watching the health grid for glories while still pumping out DPS and keeping an eye on your feet for bad reaping pools and also an eye on important interrupts or stuns and having LoH and also bop ready for the tank and healer. (yes if you pull reap into a normal trash pack or boss you have to be able to do all this at once sometimes)
To say the combat system is lacking challenge I think is a bit disingenuous. The challenge is there you just haven’t sought it out yet. To clarify, a slightly simplified toolkit in exchange for wider variety of encounter mechanics at higher level of gameplay isn’t necessarily a bad thing for the game.
is the basic premise of the combat system and game engine dated? sure but I don’t think the in game combat system lacks decent challenge or a high skill cap for many specs.
even if you look at leveling now. if you have ever done nothing but islands for a few levels then gone out to do some quests the scaling makes it very challenging and utility may be required of your character to not wipe while questing.
To be frank if you think the game is easy to ‘master’ compared to others I start to wonder what level of content you are doing currently but feel free to prove me wrong with a 3k io score if you want
There are challenging things you can do if you want, but none of it involves engaging class gameplay. Since Papa Ion decided everything needs to be playable by a 2 year old, every class feels like garbage. It doesn’t matter how good the content is if the vehicle for experiencing it, you character, is bland and lifeless. But hey, at least there’s Forums Online, that has more engaging gameplay.
Considering io score doesn’t prove anything, you probably shouldn’t end with that. The combat isn’t old, its just getting dumbed down, taking away skills/spells/talents to make it “easier” for the playerbase. Adding a GCD was the nail in the coffin. There have been so many bad decisions and changes made coming into BfA that the next expansion will just make it or break it for me.
matter of opinion of course. Me personally I enjoy all my 120 characters. They all have unique utility from the other that makes playing them worth while over my other characters, something the others don’t offer that this one can. Do we have spells missing we used to have? sure, but to say they are devoid of all character i think is hyperbole.
good IO score shows you know your character and also the content. If you don’t know your class on a high key. the key is dead. If you don’t know the content, the key is dead. Every class has something to bring that they should be using to make the run smooth and successful. He complained he can play mythic dungeons while watching netflix and still be successful and my point was m+0 isn’t really that challenging to complete in the first place when people are clearing +20 keys.
I’m not saying I agree with the GCD but as i already said a slightly simplified character spell sheet as long as we are getting more challenging content and encounters isn’t necessarily a bad thing imo. Sure it feels bad to lose abilities but along the way we have gotten some great new ones as well which I think people tend to forget.
If you want more challenging content i suggest doing, norm/heroic/mythic raids, Mythic keys, RBGS, rated Arenas.
The game itself is more focused on your average casual focus outside those I mentioned above. This game has never truly focused on the hardcore player, they tried that style with a few games and those games died fast and hard.
Although not challenging to you in open world it can still be a little challenging for others.
Too much noise in the open world. Too much trash that won’t kill you, ever.
They could cut the number of mobs in the world in half and buff the remaining half and I think the world would benefit from it. Give the world the Thanos treatment.
And giving us a way to make the world harder, through a character select difficulty toggle would be nice too.
Also: I do miss mobility for some of my classes. As crazy as it sounds, I miss the plethora of mobs that would try to silence, stun or knock you back. I loved dodging all of that and interrupting it all.
I also miss having an interrupt on my Resto Druid. I want that back.
I agree here. I think they overpruned specs in their search for diversity. I think it was fine as it was in MoP.
Everyone wants class diversity, but I think every class should have a common toolset to deal with basic combat situations. Every spec should be able to relatively comfortably single target, cleave and AoE. And it’s not a bad thing to have more buttons to press. The diversity would be in utility, and not between specs, but classes.
Bring the player not the class design mentality brought us some of the exciting classes. This should be brought back.
They tried this in MoP, specifically the Timeless Isle. What actually happens is that people will grab these mobs and drag them everywhere to get other people killed.
A good io score means you’ve mindlessly run a dungeon over and over again to the point you can memorize the most efficient way to do it, this isn’t skill so much as muscle memory. From there you create a playstyle that fits that scenario. You don’t have to adapt to random changes b/c its the same path everytime, nothing skillful about that.
We didn’t gain any abilities, the only new ones I can think you might be referring to were ones pulled from artifacts and placed in the talent tree. Those aren’t new, for some classes, those are required in their builds.
honestly it shows how many dungeons you have run on higher keys. the best path changes every week with each affix and also from season to season. I learn something new every time I run high keys each week especially with a good tank that has their own path.
pretty much every class gained a new ability in legion with their artifacts and most except bear tank got to keep them. however there are also some core abilities some specs have gotten from their azerite gear this expansion that changes the play style. One good example is the glimmer of light trait for holy pally. it has been pretty well received by most holy that try it and it warrants a completely different set of talents and stat choice and play style.
Its true classes are so boring now, I don’t even know if it’s lack of challenge or what but they are truly lifeless and 1 dimensional.
I had fun in this game when sub rogue wasn’t playable by toddlers and had a skill ceiling. When my combat rogue wasn’t a butt pirate.
When my ret paladin was a battlemage.
Now it’s just lame, bland and boring straight forward maintenance buffs up and 123 with the odd CD and literally every class plays this way now they are like copypasta’s.
