Combat Rogue Questions

I am new to rogue and was hoping I could get some straight answers here on a few things I haven’t been able to find any consensus on. I apologize if these have been addressed- I don’t typically use the forums and the Rogue one seemed mostly aimed at retail. If any experienced rogues wouldn’t mind helping me out, I would appreciate it.

My first question is about hit. I know I need 9% (or 8% w weapon skill apparantly), which I already have from combat talents and gear. What I am unsure about is- do I want to stop stacking hit at 9%? Every pre-BIS list I can find has top items with hit on them, and getting them all puts your hit waaay over that cap.

I have heard that as combat rogues, our DPS is mostly white damage so you want to stack hit as much as possible (which would explain why so many of the top “preBIS” items have hit on them.) I have also heard that stacking hit beyond cap is a waste because at that point you sacrifice agi, str, stam, etc, and that once you hit cap you need to focus on the gear without hit to fill in the rest of the slots. Not sure which is the way to go for PVE.

The other question is not as pressing, but while I have your attention…

Currently using Thrash Blade/Hanzo Blade. I want to farm DalRend set, but I figure I have a while before that happens. In the meantime, I am going to get Mirah’s Song for OH, but what’s better than Thrash Blade until DR? I am not dropping 500g on a Krol Blade. I can’t get a straight answer if Sword of Zeal or Assassination Blade are actually improvements over Thrash, but either of those are affordable on my realm.

So I guess I am looking for answers about Thrash Blade vs Sword of Zeal vs Assassination Blade, or if there are any others that are better until hell freezes over and I land the DRs. I know raid gear is obvi better but I won’t be raiding for a while.

Any input is appreciated. Good hunting!

You’re going to need a lot more than 9% hit. I believe you want somewhere around 19% to 24% because of dual wieldings higher ratio to miss. That would avoid auto-attack missing (which is significant in raiding)

Yep, with SnD and other haste abilities your auto-attack is killer, much like fury warriors.

Some misinformation in your thread.
MH white hits and Yellow hits are 9%
Your offhand hit is 25%
Your poison hit is 17%.

Increasing your hit is across the board a damage increase.

Asto weapon choices it’s really easy. Slow MH is good (2.6 or slower) and IIRC Thrash blade has the best speed and proc for combat swords out of the weapons you’ve listed.

9% hit is the cap to not miss yellow attacks. With 305+ weapon skill, this becomes 6% hit required (on 63 mobs). There’s also the combat talent for 5% hit, so rogues can hit the soft cap pretty easy.

After you reach the soft cap, you can stack hit/crit equally. You’ll never reach the white attack hit cap because it’s absurdly high with dual wielding.

Rogues also need hit a little less than warriors, since energy generation isn’t dependent on white attacks building rage.

you only need 1% hit on your gear, precision gives 5% and expertise gives 3%

I think 10% is a good amount and then the rest into crit

True

Incorrect information.

Pretty sure they said the same thing.

9% hit cap
Combat gets 5%
Expertise gives 5 weapon skill making hit requirement 6% against bosses/63 mobs.

6% hit minus 5% from talent means 1% hit on your gear will yellow cap you.

I read it wrong.

Thrash blade is also much better than it’s stats would imply due to its proc.

Zeal sims slightly higher in pve then krol. And krol sims slightly higher in pvp then zeal. They are pretty equal. I snagged a krol for a great price so I went with that personally.

with +5 weapon skill and +0% hit, your miss chance vs. a lvl 63 mob with yellow attacks goes from 8.6% to 5.4%; each additional point of weapon skill after the 5th one will increase hit chance by .04%, and, as well, every point of weapon skill will regardless decrease the chance that you’re blocked, dodged, or parried by .04%, and also increase your crit chance by .04%
furthermore, +10 weapon skill will remove the damage penalty from glancing blows, so there isn’t much reason to go over +10 skill, although getting an extra 5 after that is like getting 1% hit chance(and extra stuff), since you go from 6.2% miss chance to 6% miss chance

base miss chance vs. an npc of your level, assuming that you have clvl*5 weapon skill, is exactly 5%, and each enemy level increases their defense by 5, which increases their block, dodge, and parry chances by .2%, increases the chance that you miss by .2%, and decreases the chance that they receive a non-spell crit by .2%
however, if an enemy NPC has 3 lvls(+15 defense) over you, then they, as a special mechanic, gain an extra 3% chance to be missed; I’m unsure about enemies more than 3 levels over you, but there aren’t any since you’re 60 now, aside from bloodlord mankodir after he kills someone

so, anyway, the soft hit cap, at which point physical yellow attacks will never miss, is 8.6%, and the hard hit cap, at which point no physical attack will ever miss, is 25.6% hit, both assuming that your enemy is level 63
and the PvP hit soft hit cap is 5%, while the PvP hard hit cap(barring +defense on enemy gear) is 22%
a player with +15 defense over you will not gain an extra 3% chance to be missed like npcs do

and im unsure about whether poisons run off of physical hit or spell hit

and, most high-lvl rogues that I see use mh dal rend’s or krol blade over thrash blade, so its pretty safe to assume that both of those and sword of zeal are better than thrash blade
if i were you, id skip buying sword of zeal/krol blade and just farm ubrs for the swords, or maybe ony will drop a viskag for you before you see dalrend mh

I appreciate all the feedback. I should say that I know what hit cap is and how it works- I was just noticing how many of the preBIS items had hit on them to add up way past that, and didn’t know if I needed to mix and match from the lists (I am using Wowhead) to avoid stacking -too much- hit. Rogue is all new to me. As it stands I have 6% from gear alone and there are even more slots listing preBIS with hit on them to fill out, and that was what made me question if I should switch some out for gear with more agi/crit/stam etc. But it looks like the prebis list I am using is working as intended.

As far as swords go, I will probably stick with Thrash for now unless I see a good deal for Zeal on AH. I’ve not seen a Krol under 500g and I’d rather have the mount.

Thanks again for all of your responses.
