Collector's Bounty = It's Complicated

Always seeing both sides of the spectrum on how good or bad people are doing with the event. So many are saying that they are doing great and are getting a lot of mounts while others are doing horribly with none. Insofar, I’ve gotten two mounts. Vitreous Stone Drake and Azure Drake. Wanting GMOD, Invincable, Drake of the South & North Wind, and then I would love to get the Warglaives drop.
My getting these to drop status with these is very much complicated to say the least.

People often don’t mention how many times they’re actually running instances, whether its with alts or on multiple difficulties where applicable.

The buffed drop rate is about 5%, which is still pretty low if you’re just running it once a week. But if you got 5+ alts that can get runs in? Then your chances are pretty high of getting it within the event.

It’s simple for me - if I feel like running for a certain mount a couple of times, I will… if I don’t, I won’t.

5% is a crap buff. Of course you’re going to hear success stories. WoW has 7-12 million active subscribers according to google. We’ll say 7 million roughly are doing this event. Thats 350,000 people who should get something. It’s all a gimmick to keep these items exclusive while giving the illusion that they are giving you something. 5% is garbage and we all know it.

It really is just RNG.

I got Rivendare on my first try (during the event - only a few hundred attempts before the event. >_>).

I got Invincible on my 2nd attempt (very few attempts before event).

I got Zulian Panther and the fire bird from Firelands in 1 attempt.

New Karazhan Midnight after 4-5 attempts.

Anzu after 5 attempts

No luck so far:

  • 3 attempts on Vortex Pinnacle
  • 3 attempts on Al’akir
  • 1 attempt at GMOD
  • 3 attempts at Malygos
  • 1 attempt at Stonecore
  • 1 attempt at Mimiron’s Head
  • 3 attempts at Ashes of Alar
  • 15 attempts at OG Karazhan Attumen (plus hundreds of attempts over the past decades)

The Attumen mount is my most wanted. It’s the one I try for the most often, and I’ve taken almosty entire alt army (thanks Panda Remix) during week 1 with no luck. I have at least 7 characters currently sitting in Karazhan to try again tonight.

EDIT:
Not mounts, but I’ve also gone for legendaries.

2 runs of Black Temple, 1 Warglaive drop.

3 runs through Sunwell, no bow.

But TONS of transmog. It’s like I was dressing my characters with an empty closet. I’m probably at 200 new items now.

If you haven’t been farming these places already and don’t have the mog the x2 drop rate isn’t bad. But it still overloads you with rings, neck, and trinkets which sell for crap and have no in game value.

I have 40+ attempts on Utgarde Pinnacle, at this point I’m thinking I’m doing something wrong. What if I NEED to kill first 2 bosses… what if I have to clear the skeletons at the entrance. MAybe I have to jump 3 times… or what if it’s the harpoon sequence…

Running 5 alts and got 3 mounts. Zulian panther (took a couple days), Vengence (first try this week, but not first try ever) and then Ragnaros mount. Been there a ton and took all 5 to get last week.

Still working on Dragonsoul duo, The Air boss in Uldum and the drake in the stone core dungeon (about 15 heroic runs so far) as well as Jaina. and GMOD(from LFR)

My big bonus came from primarily playing Druid for years. Before they lifted the restrictions, my wardrobe was primarily leather.

But yeah, all the necks, rings, and trinkets suuuck.

Am I supposed to take this hallway instead of the other one? Kill this boss first rather than that boss? Kill everything or avoid the fodder? Loot or ignore everything and only take the loot from the boss that drops?

My mind is twisted on this event. Especially Icecrown…

ive gotten literally nothing

I feel like Im on the extreme luck side, I’ve gotten 16 mounts so far, no Invincible or Mim’s Head, but still super lucky!

This is a good point. I got four mounts last week:

Sharkbait - 10 Freehold runs
GMOD - 50 Dazaralor runs
Marrowfang - 20 Necrotic Wake runs
Midnight - 8 Return to Karazhan runs

Still working on the Zerith Overseer, Underrot Crawg, and Tazavesh Gearglider.

Also, for people saying that 5% is a crap buff, or for people having a hard time visualizing what a 5% chance looks like, there’s an easy visual aid.

Grab a 20-sided dice (we’re all nerds here, I’m sure most of you have one lying around somewhere). Roll it. If you roll a 20, congratulations, that’s a mount drop. That’s the same odds as a 5% drop chance. Actually, the mounts have a slightly BETTER chance to drop than that, because the 5% buff is just being added onto what their original drop chance was, not replacing it. Granted, it’s probably not MASSIVELY different, but worth mentioning.

Very nice. Im after 7 total and have 4 of them. Got the Air boss one today at lunch. 7 toons parked outside Dragonsoul and then going for Jaina.

It’s not a crap buff. You don’t want the mounts, don’t do it. I have already shown you the math for you. If you tried you would have 90% of the mounts by the end of the event. But you killed 10 things and threw a fit because it’s not a 100% drop rate. Thought you were unsubbing anyway? Can I have your gold?

To be fair, for an event like this I probably would have preferred a slight better percentage buff. (Nothing crazy. Maybe 10% or so), but that’s just my opinion, and I don’t think it’s a failure at 5%.

But also, his math isn’t mathing. 350K out of 7 Million is an assumption that every player that does this event only does one run with one toon through out the event.

Using those numbers, lets say 7M players participate. I would say a good average of number of alts is 10 alts per player (humor me that’s a total guess, but probably not super far off). That’s 70M runs a week.

The event lasts, roughly, 4 weeks for a total 280M runs over the course of the event.

At 5% success rate, that’s roughly…14M mounts dropped throughout the life of the event…Not bad really.

Today is the day I will find out. Also I don’t give my gold to nerds.

Personally I am having about a 10% success rate overall for all mounts, and I got a lot of them. I am struggling with a few though and I can see how if I was a lot less lucky this could have happened with all the others. I am throwing everything I have at Mimiron’s head, even 60 and 70 level alts. Nothing.

Here’s a rough estimate of your chances here.

Most of the mounts have less than a 1% chance of dropping so I’m just going to round that to zero.

So to keep it easy let’s argue that you have the 5% shot from the bonus at any mount when you kill the boss.

You have a 50% chance to get the mount at about 14 runs

75% chance at 28 runs

~88% chance at 42 runs
~93% chance at 56 runs

You never hit 100%

My guy, old-school legendary/mount farming is a gimmick of content design in and of itself. It’s just one big lottery RNG snoozefest some people find enjoyable because the main way they get enjoyment out of a video game is to do the same things on repeat. They target however many they prefer and by the time they get them another 10 exist; there’s no way to keep up with these 1% (if not less) drop rates that take so their content exists forever. It’s already not fun, it’s just something to repeat if you enjoy that kind of thing.

And to that extent complaining about 5Xing the drop rate on rare mounts is a bonkers bad take. There will be winners and losers, especially those that throw in the towel after 10-20 attempts, but the majority of people who dedicate themselves to farming this event over the course of the month are going to see noticeable returns, especially those who already prioritize farming old raids so this is just a big month for them to really go at it.
