Clueless about Transmogrification

Hi…I am coming back to WOW after a 4 year break so I have missed a lot and forgotten even more…

Question: Do I need to retain the items for I want to use for Transmogrification in my bank or the void bank?

Once an item has entered your Appearance Collection, you no longer need to have that item in your inventory in order to transmog that appearance.

More info on the Appearance Collection:

If you see the following message in blue on an item, it means you do NOT have that appearance yet.

Once you learn the appearance, you will see this message in chat:

Now that item I just learned will appear in my collection. Click on the horse head icon on your action bar to access your Collections.

There are rules about how & when an item is entered into the Collection.

  • If the item is a normal piece of gear (i.e., not cosmetic) then it must be soulbound to your character.
  • Armor must be the appropriate armor type for your class.
    • Cloth = Mage, Warlock, Priest
    • Leather = Monk, Rogue, Druid, Demon Hunter
    • Mail = Hunter, Shaman
    • Plate = Warrior, Death Knight, Paladin
  • Weapons must be able to be equipped by your class
    • Death Knight: Axes, Swords, Maces, Polearms, Off-Hands
    • Demon Hunter: Warglaives, Fist Weapons, One-Handed Axes, One-Handed Swords, Off-Hands
    • Druid: Maces, Polearms, Staves, Daggers, Fist Weapons, Off-Hands
    • Hunter: Axes, Swords, Polearms, Staves, Daggers, Fist Weapons, Bows, Crossbows, Guns, Off-Hands
    • Mage: One-Handed Swords, Staves, Daggers, Wands, Off-Hands
    • Monk: One-Handed Axes, One-Handed Swords, One-Handed Maces, Polearms, Staves, Fist Weapons, Off-Hands
    • Paladin: Axes, Swords, Maces, Polearms, Shields, Off-Hands
    • Priest: One-Handed Maces, Staves, Daggers, Wands, Off-Hands
    • Rogue: One-Handed Axes, One-Handed Swords, One-Handed Maces, Daggers, Fist Weapons, Bows, Crossbows, Guns, Off-Hands
    • Shaman: Axes, Maces, Staves, Daggers, Fist Weapons, Shields, Off-Hands
    • Warlock: One-Handed Swords, Staves, Daggers, Wands, Off-Hands
    • Warrior: Axes, Swords, Maces, Polearms, Staves, Daggers, Fist Weapons, Bows, Crossbows, Guns, Shields, Off-Hands
  • Any trade or refund timers must be expired on the item in order for it to be entered into the collection. Those timers will expire in 2 hours of real time.
