Claw VS Bite

I’m trying to decide between owl and bat for a leveling pet. Owls have claw and bats have bite. Which is better?

Leveling a hunter for the first time and been wondering the same thing.

I don’t think both are needed but is there an advantage to it? Bite uses more focus so I think the pet starts out the fighting using it at least once, then claws for the rest of the time until it’s out. Essentially a pet with both claw and bite would be nice for shorter fights while questing but in a long term fight bite would be used maybe once and never again.

Now, I could be wrong on all of this and hopefully someone who knows more can chime in here but that was the conclusion I came to personally.

bite is more damage per focus
claw is more damage per second, provided enough focus
pick claw, and dont bother spending training points on bite when you could improve a resistance or something instead; the dps increasing from having both is negligible, and the added “burst” is negligible in PvP

so get an owl

I may be a bit weird but when I was leveling my hunter I always found that with claw it was constantly focus starved because the pet was spamming it and didn’t have any focus to cast growl and taunt the mob off me when I got agro. So I used bite with it’s 10 second cooldown and switched to claw in instances where I turned growl off any ways. But then I never micro managed my pet either.

Owl. Always owl. Toggle claw only for group dps, toggle growl+screech only for solo threat. Screech is like a weaker claw, but the debuff has a significant threat component, so it’s the best threat gen you can get on a pet combined with growl.

My hunters in Classic use Claw and turn Bite off, on pets that have both.

That seems to work best for

  • the pet keeping aggro
  • the pet not running out of…mana? whatever it is

I have no numbers, just experience on three hunters (42 and below).

Neither, imo (things may have been different on private servers)

Bite is good if you don’t have the energy talent. If you do have it, take claw.

Similarly, if you have the speed talent, then you don’t also need dash. If the pet can’t get dash, then it really needs the talent.

claw is 25 focus while growl is 15 your pet will always growl first if its starting from 0 focus

So the pet will just use the lowest cost ability once the focus starts to regenerate from zero?

I guess if a person was into multi-tasking enough they could macro some of the pet abilities like Bite and such so that they were only used when the player saw their pet had enough focus available.

Or vulture, same spells and more armor

So claw>bite, but does anybody have the numbers showing the dps difference between the two before I go all the way to Teldrassil when I could grab a vulture from Westfall or tame a bat on my way to Scarlet Monastery? I’m guessing it really doesn’t matter in the scheme of things if you’re supposed to only use Growl + Screech anyway.
