Persistence can have pay offs. Zandalari paladins and blue eyed blood elves are just recent changes. Just gotta get people to push for it.
You’ll probably get your wish but not in Shadowlands. I bet that generic starter zone is a precursor to all race/class combos.
Which I think is a shame. I think certain races having certain classes brings a nice RP element to this game.
I’m also a voice of dissent. Not every race needs to be every class; having restrictions gives races identity. Specific examples of singular people being a class is also not an open door for that race. Outliers are a thing.
I personally think that our player characters as they exist right now are considered outliers with all the “Chosen one” stuff the dev team has been slowly pushing on us.
Especially with the whole “ancient/powerful artifacts being left in our care” story lines that have been present for the past few expansions.
I do get that like, our existence canonically is really terse with the, yeah the champion exists, and it’s simultaneously us, but also not us individually thing. But our characters, whether we like the direction of the lore or not, are being put on a pedestal as a “Only you have the power to do this” which just sorta makes us not to be the “average” character in our respective races anyways.
I’m not sure what you mean by ‘your race’.
And why does the argument have to be ‘every race should be able to play every class because that’s what’s most fun’? How about ‘what makes the most sense in the world of Warcraft’?
Blizzard did not put this ‘limitation’ to ‘prevent fun gameplay’. Blizzard did it because if they wanted to have you invested in the world/characters/stories they were trying to create, they needed to ‘sell the idea’ that an orc cannot be a paladin for example. Because that goes against the orcs’ value system. The paladins’ order was created in the Second War specifically to push back the orcs (and slaughter them if needs be, which they did). It would look very silly from a narrative perspective if you’re trying to emphasize that there was this ‘supposed old hatred on both sides’ because of what had happened, then you go to your creation screen and you can create an orc paladin…
Now, that does not mean that the world cannot evolve or they can’t create new lore (which they have done plenty). But until they do (and have it make sense), those limitations should remain…
I’m really wanting Blizz and the Devs to see these threads and rethink their “no.” They have back tracked before and it’s not like adding any other class besides druid would be difficult. The animations exist already for all of them.
I think the lore can evolve. I mean we didn’t know about Drust druids until BFA. Didn’t know about Suramar until Legion. Lots of new additions and changes. I don’t think demon hunter was a positive change, but it was still progression and evolution of the lore.
Highmountain Warlocks. With Fel antlers. .
Did the Grimtotem have warlocks?
I don’t think so. I believe it was just Mages and Rogues plus the other traditional classes for taurens.
Well thought out post OP. I agree with some points and disagree with others but I see where you’re coming from.
I’m ok with certain races not being certain classes personally. A rogue with hooves, for example, just wouldn’t make sense to me. But I acknowledge that’s just my opinion.
It’s interesting it mentions Forsaken within the ranks of the Grimtotem. Also there’s a heavy Twilight Hammer influx in Thousand Needles after Cata. I could see Magtha getting some of her people to learn demonic abilities from either the Forsaken or remnants of the Twilight Hammer texts. I only say this because of how ambitious she is and her willingness to fight dirty.
It’s listed as a representative class on the wiki, but I can’t find any actual examples.
You know, that makes sense. I have a really old memory of a Grimtotem with a blueberry pet but I could never find it either. I thought I was remembering wrong but maybe I wasn’t.
Haha same. But it would be an angle for tauren to get mages or locks if they were Grimtotem who offered their services. As opposed to the… uh… Legion aligned Highmountain tribe that I can’t remember the name of currently.
Still keeping this flame lit. We want new race class combinations!
I kinda feel like if a kultiran can be a rogue a draenei or tauren could.
Especially with the Rangari around. Draenai totally could, for sure. Tauren might need a bit of extra doin’ though.
Unless there are examples I’m missing, of course.
I mean the fact that Hunters have camo and taurens can be hunters and use camo kinda overrides the “hooves aren’t stealthy.”
I’d also say that many tauren are ranger-esqe in their tribal nature. I find it hard to believe they haven’t learned how to be unseen.
Blizz, I need that Night Elf paladin!
I need blood elf druid!
