Class/Race Combos & Player Customization

Just finished watching the interview with Morgan Day and MrGM.
A lot of stuff I was happy with in that interview, for sure.

But there’s just one thing that really bothered me, and that was about the last question, asking about the potential for new Class/Race combinations.

They said there are no plans for Shadowlands, but it’s something they’re willing to explore.
So I’ll just go ahead and give my argument advocating for Blizzard to take another look at this.

I really don’t understand no new race/class combo’s in an expansion where one of the main features is greatly expanding Character Customization.
Especially when there are tons of examples of NPC’s that have combos that players do not.

As for examples of said NPC’s

  • Goblin Monk (Gakkiz Blusterblast)
  • Worgen Shaman (Raul the Tenacious)
  • Night Elf Paladin (Delas Moonfang)
  • Gnome Paladin (Commander Rhyssa - Hearthstone) *
  • Undead Paladin (Dragonrider Talritha - Hearthstone) *, (Sir Zeliek), (Scarlet Commander Marjhan)
  • Worgen Paladin (Lightfang Enforcer - Hearthstone) *
  • Draenei Rogue (The Rangari & Mishka of the SI:7)
  • Blood Elf Shaman (Elementalist Starion)
  • Blood Elf Druid (High Botanist Freywinn)
  • Draenei Druid (Feralfen Druid) **
Spoilers for Exiles Reach

There’s even currently an Orc Priest in the new starting zone for Horde side players.
New players who may want to dig deeper into these options would see this and realize that Orc Priests aren’t actually playable. That option is limited only to Mag’har Orcs. (Which new players won’t have available to them immediately)
Which may just bring up confusion as to why there’s only one Orc Priest

I’ll admit that out of all of these, I’m super biased/more interested towards the inclusion of Goblin Monks. But anyone else interested (or not interested even!) in making more inclusions for these combinations should also have some sort of platform to voice their opinions!
I’ll go ahead and paste an excerpt I posted to another thread recently.

EDIT: It’s been brought to my attention Orc Priests were also common with the Scarshield Orcs. The Scarshield Acoltyes have Priest based spells. They do appear more or less to be blackrock, which are integated with the Mag’har. But it is interesting how long they’ve been around.

Even way back into Warlords of Draenor, there was a Pandaren Deathknight named “Gravewalker Gie”
And now with the Advent of Shadowlands, Pandaren, along with the other Allied Races were granted access to Death Knights as playable choices.

It feels Blizzard will put these characters in to show that they exist and are possible, but then never expand on anything beyond that, and it feels a bit like a tease to be completely frank.

One of the main reasons for the introduction of a greatly expanded customization feature is to enable more expression through player interaction with your lens of the world. And there are people who would love to be able to express themselves with their favorite class along with their favorite race!

These combinations are proven to be possible, so what is the reason why they can’t be accessed by players?

Blizzard was pretty Adamant initially about Zandalari Trolls not being Paladins when they were announced as a playable race, but eventually they understood why people wanted them because they existed back in Mists in the forms of Prelates.

With this in mind, I would greatly implore Blizzard to reevaluate their stance, especially if they’re willing to be open about the concept.

Footnotes

*Hearthstone cards can at times not be considered canon. With stuff like Undead Anduin. But for stuff like NPC’s I think expanding on their lore to be canon could be interesting
**The reason Draenei have Shamanism is because of their Broken forms being heavily interested in it, and the Feralfen Druids are also ancestors of the Draenei

Some oddball suggestions like Draenei Druids and Blood Elf Shamans I don’t exactly see happening unless there’s like, a lot of work doing retcons or making new lore. But there are more simple ones that can be done more easily

Tl:Dr
More race/class combos would be an excellent addition to tack onto the addition of a greatly expanded player customization feature, AND taking advantage of the revamped leveling experience, so that older players may have more opportunities to experience it.
I think taking a second look at the NPC’s that have combinations that aren’t available to players would be a good idea if they’re willing to listen to feedback regarding this.

I 100% back your idea.

Not only is it long overdue but it will also generate more players going through the new leveling experience.

I agree completely and feel it is kind of silly and arbitrary to deny certain races the opportunity to play as particular classes. It just seems weird…especially since it would be so easy to just give other races these options.

Except for Druid forms, it is not like it would take any real effort to do, right?

A race class combo I’d love to see is dwarf druids, and I feel SL could be the xp for it since we’re getting customizations for dwarfs that basically let’s us play as Wildhammer dwarfs and Wildhammers can be druids https://wow.gamepedia.com/Wildhammer_clan

Cataclysm monks MUST happen. I am absolutely stunned that they aren’t going to be made playable now that Blizzard’s excuse (cataclysm start zones) is no longer valid

Would be epic.

I’m inclined to draw the line at Undead Paladins. The rest would be great though

Well see that strikes me as a violation of lore, not an argument for it to be playable.

Orcs intentionally can’t use the Light because of the fel corruption. Drinking demon blood will do that to you.

EDIT:
I’m leaving the above part for the sake of honesty. Turns out that there were Orc Priests in Classic, so there is an argument for them to be playable.

Even if it was special to the Blackrock Clan, that clan’s skin is apparently being made playable with the Shadowlands customization, so there’s very little reason not to allow them

Honestly, this would be the best thing for them to do along side of more customizations that they are implementing. Especially after driving a story like the Night warrior, how do you not get a Paladin for night elves out of that?

I’m in high favor of Blood Elf Druids. I’ve wanted to play one since the Sin’dorei were added in TBC.

I understand the hoops needed to gain a binding to the Emerald Dream but my character has technically been helping the green dragon flight at almost every turn. I kinda feel like this is something that could be attuned at this point.

Also we as characters are supposed to be unique and the champion/hero/chosen whatever you want to call us. It really feels like we should be able to be almost anything at this point in the game.

Animations are also a thing. Each class has their own animations specific to the class, so models need to be reworked to support them. This is especially true of classes like Monks or Demon Hunter.

Well if you’ve ever played with toys that change your race. Most character races have all the animations in game for them.

Druid forms are the only thing really holding them back. Well and Demon Hunter animations.

Would love to see one day:
Horde

  • Tauren Mage and Rogue
  • Highmountain Priest and Paladin
  • Zandalari Warlock
  • Goblin Monk
  • Orc Priest (they’ve been in the game since Classic, COME ON BLIZZ)

Alliance

  • Kul Tiran Warlock and Paladin
  • Night Elf Paladin
  • Gnome Paladin and Shaman
  • Worgen Monk
  • Draenei Rogue

Panda Druids

They have? o.O

Yeah in Lower Blackrock Spire. Give me a sec.

Orc Priest and as a bonus because I always see people say “durr orc Mages” … the 15-year old Orc Mage

And I’ll edit my post. Guess I’m not as much of a lore buff as I thought rofl

I have no in-game examples of Sin’dorei druids. I don’t really count the Botanist in Botanica as a druid. But before the retcon the ward stones around Eversong were druidic stones. A lot of our quests in Eversong still mention them as such too. In WC2 the high elves of Quel’thalas had rangers and druids aiding the alliance effort against the horde.

I think with some rather easy writing Blood Elves could gain druids as we technically had them in the past. Even dating back to when all elves were a homogenized race all under Azshara.

I believe that passage you’re talking about just said “elf Druid” and it was assumed that it was a high elf since they were exiled, a nelf Druid wouldn’t be hanging around them.

But if a Druid traveled with them it was probably a family member. Not much of a case for an entire order.

HOWEVER

What would make perfect Druids is pandas. The August Celestials are wild gods so it should have been an option from the beginning :rage:

I want Tauren mages, locks, and rogues. The grimtotem tribe has all of those classes in their ranks and now tauren are getting grimtotem customization. Please and thanks.

With the new starting island that is canonically set after Worgen, Goblins, and eventually Pandaren appeared within the ranks of both factions, there is no excuse for the two Cataclysm races to be excluded from the class.

The biggest shame is that the work is done. Vulpera already share their animations with Goblins and Monks turned into Worgen in Duskwood continue to use the same animations with the Worgen model.

I see your point. However I think that could be something the Farstriders have kept as a tenet of their order. Perhaps not in the forefront of the ranger order but I could see them keeping the teachings going. To me it seems unlikely only a small number of elven druids left with their families. The exiles numbered a great deal, which is why it was exile over execution. We got a few other things kinda tossed into the mix aa well. Thas’alah the mother tree of Eversong & the Ghostlands, but in a dev sketch we find out it was a world tree. Though it was torn down when Arthas attacked. I think druidism was a lot more prevalent in Sin’dorei society than has been let on.

I could also see panda druids as well, especially with the August Celestials.

More race/class combos is a huge must, and a big gain for any MMORPG.
