I’m excited to give it a whirl, as I wasn’t around then. I have heard so much about it and even got a chance to play a bit on the beta stress test last night. Aside from the constant battle over mobs, I rather enjoyed it.
I’m just wondering the viability of that version of the game. How is it going to remain fun for all eternity? There will be a perpetual content drought. It’s just going to be classic WoW.
One of the things that has kept the game going is the addition of new xpacs, content, raids, dungeons, etc. All you have is leveling, doing the same old dungeons and raids over and over again. The static fluidity of the game will get stale and the player base will fall off. The game will lose progression. That is because there are only so many alts you can level, so many dungeons you can run and so many raids to conquer until it just lose interest.
How is WoW Classic going to remain viable, long term?
OK? But that doesn’t answer my question. Read these forums and you will understand what I mean when I ask, “How will it remain viable long term?”. The same players who come on here and complain or whine about content droughts between patches/xpacs will be content in a game that will have none? How can this be viable? Would you, individually, be content to run the same dungeons or raids over and over again all while knowing there will be very little to no changes coming?
Regardless of how you feel about the longevity of Classic, I think you should give it a try come August 27th. Since it doesn’t cost anything extra, you have nothing to lose.
That being said, I’ll give you some reasons why Classic will have some longevity in it (at least 2 years imo):
Leveling takes a long time in Classic, but it doesn’t feel pointless. Because herbs/ore/some gear you get while leveling is still useful at end game, and because each level feels good to achieve, it’s gratifying in itself. It’s hard to explain exactly, but honestly the best I can say is that it feels like a valid part of end-game progression, just not at end-game.
Without sharding server communities will start to grow, and with that will come community driven content. There will be impromptu faction raids, guild events out in the world, etc. This will keep things fresh.
Since you weren’t around in Vanilla, you’ll still have that feeling of new for each of the 6 planned content patches as Blizzard rolls them out over the next two years.
I don’t think you need to stress about the longevity of Classic, I think I’d rather just take it as it is: an opportunity to try and play something new, and enjoy the time it is here, just like we do with any other expansion. If you truly are worried about the “health” of the game over time, you can look at the private server dudes. Those guys have been playing the same game for 15 years and still play it. My advice, login on August 27th, take your time, smell the peace blooms, and enjoy it, don’t stress about it.
That’s the thing. That’s it. You aren’t getting content, Classic will be maintained in a bubble that, once Stage 6 is reached however far away that may be, there will be nothing after. That’s what the server is meant to be, that’s what we’re being given. They may consider the viability of BC servers, but then you run into a huge host of problems and issues with what this project was really meant to be.
Personally I don’t think it was well thought out before implementation. But that’s just me.
I see it being niche. There are people who will be content sitting in Orgrimmar or IronForge on their epic mounts in their tier 2 or 3 gear all day long.
I’m asking a general question regarding the viability of Classic Wow when compared to the fluidity and progression to Retail. I’m talking about both. So why is this an issue with you?
I’m a Wrath baby and playing on the beta stress last night did bring back some memories of how this game used to be. I did enjoy it and my wife and I are excited for it. I remember playing on my Tauren without BOA gear and constantly getting my keeester handed to me if I was unluckily pulling more than I can handle. I would die endlessly and have to get help. It was frustratingly fun because it wasn’t just a “fish in a barrel” life. I had to work for everything. I earned it and gained a strong appreciation for what I had. I look forward to this but worry about it getting old.
I think it wont really matter much as long as its keeping some subs active.
Blizzard can either let those $$$ go to pirate servers or make classic available so players can play the official game.
Probably get more relevant information/feedback on the classic forums buuuut its been said they might consider other older expansion centric servers if classic does well. IE Something like classic burning crusade and classic wrath of the lich king sort of thing - as for the viability of longer term for classic itself most players that get invested will likely play for at least a couple of years before getting anywhere near bored.
Which might get us through the agony of BFA to hopefully a better expansion -.^
For the average modern WoW player, it simply won’t. The people who LOVE it might get a full expansion worth of enjoyment out of it. Like 1.5-2 years. A majority of regular players who just try it out will probably get bored before they even level a single character, but that’s not really what we’re talking about I suppose.
Beyond that (1.5-2 years for those who loved it), the only people who will do anything other than dabble now and again are the types of people who have been playing on Private Servers for the last decade, and even that group is questionable as Private Servers often have seasons or open new servers to have fresh starts / races / whatever, as well as the option of playing “fun” servers with different rulesets than standard WoW.
