Obviously a classic question here.
I’m 29, so I can use the razor arrows (min level 25). But as I’m saving up for my mount, I’m wondering if I really need to be paying 6x the $$ for arrows (3s vs 50c). I get that I can kill things faster with the razors, but it seems like a dubious trade.
BM spec if it matters - with razors I can get aggro off my pet with a 24 bow.
Kargoz hunter guide watch it! Its great! You’re supposed to upgrade as often as possible.
Mount is priority for leveling speed, my main is a half-raid-geared mage, so I just buy dumb things for my hunter alt indiscriminately.
If ammo is that much of a price hike for ya, I highly recommend skinning as one of your profs, should easily break even in the lower levels.

Solid, i forgot to mention skinning.
I always upgraded as soon as the new ammo was available. Usually I wouldn’t restock the lower-level ammo too high if I knew I had new ammo coming along soon so that way I was always low on ammo and needing to restock anyway when I went to get the new ammo.
On some level I regret not maintaining skinning as I levelled, but then I think about how at least it was a bit easier on the bag space. I really should have been bothered to make a bank alt but I was usually passing by a major city often enough to throw stuff on the auction house. I did keep mining up-to-date and made a lot off that. I got my mount shortly after level 40 (I kept questing where I was and picked up my mount next time I passed by Durotar) so it worked out, and I’m close enough to my epic mount now at 60. Probably not going to spend too much more time on Classic, though, to be honest.

It does seem like a real kick in the coin purse, but considering that your two primary sources of damage are your pet and auto shot I feel keeping up with the best possible ammo is well worth it. Consider for instance how incremental ranged weapon dps upgrades typically are vs. how significant the jump is in getting a new tier of ammo.
That is why Engineering is so great on a hunter. You get to make your own ammo and guns to use it. I have just run into the point though where I can make the next tier of engineering ammo but it requires level 30 whereas there is ammo that does more damage for level 25 so I have had to start buying ammo for the moment.

Thanks all. I actually have skinning, but I’m sending full stacks of medium and heavy to my bank alt for now. The AH prices for trade goods are depressed at the moment, as most people are still saving for mounts themselves. I’ll sell the leather once I get closer to 40. Despite that I have 16g at 29, which I think puts me on track.
Someone on the classic forums actually recommended Rough arrows, but right now it looks like Sharp is the highest grade that I can use without regularly pulling aggro off my pet (a hyena). “Growl” does not seem to be cutting it, even with BM spec.

Vendor the leather, don’t try and sell it on the AH… too much competition for VERY little profit. skin and vendor as you go… I’m only lvl 23 and I have almost 20g… easypeasy
Yeah, I hear ya, I’m on the fence. You can definitely lose money, compared to vendors, if prices are low and no one bites. But I have been able to sell some ML stacks for ~20s (they vendor for 10s).
I mean you do you man… but it’s much easier to just vendor as you go… bags stay empty, easy to fill, easy to make money as you level.
invest in decent bags, kill everything as you go, skin everything as you go, vendor it all when you get to town, or quest hubs… (repeat)
easy money… I actually don’t recommend getting a mount tbh… if your riding past sh_t then you aren’t killing it and you aren’t skinning it…
your money intake goes down DRASTICALLY once you get a mount… just a PSA
when you factor in the silver you had to pay to send that leather to your bank alt + the AH fee… did you really make that much profit?
