Classic using the 8.x Client Foundation

The primary dataminer for the bnet.marlam.in site says the new files look to be using the 8.x client as a foundation.

Looks like they’re going to try and reuse the client as it updates in Retail to keep Classic updated with bugfixes and exploit patches.

This isn’t really surprising. Of course they’re going to update the client to keep up with all the fixes to it. In the end the base is irrelevant as long as it looks, feels, and plays like Vanilla.

As I suspected.

A single game with different server archetypes.

Not a separate game as others have tried to claim.

Many people were sure the Client was fixed, and Addon API was locked in too. This confirms they’re keeping it together.

Meh which means it will more than likely run like garbage on my laptop because that’s how retail runs.

Very disappointed. The vanilla client runs just fine.

Not surprising as using the current client lets them keep up to date on any security issues.
The people who thought it was fixed had no real basis to make that judgment other than that’s just what the demo was running.

If you ever thought they were going to use the outdated, horribly security-hole-filled 1.12 client, you were always going to be disappointed.

:persevere::persevere: i gotta go ro bed

The Vanilla client hasn’t been “Run” since 2006. Bit out of date.

They note that it’s a lot smaller than the BfA client, it’s just based on it.

We always knew it wasn’t going to use the 1.12 client. Blizzard already said they were taking a modern client and working backwards, and the Blizzcon demo was based on 7.3.5.

The lower end graphics of Vanilla should be easier for your laptop to handle as well.

Good… Good…

:sunglasses:

Blizzard announced that they weren’t using the vanilla client a long time ago.

I hope the rumors of a graphics toggle are true. I really need to upgrade.

The old graphics will probably be the default.

This is a feature, not a bug folks. Keeping true to the evolving tech within the company lets the team focus on content issue (the things people care about) instead of rogue client OS and platform versions (which we don’t care about beyond that it functions properly at all).

We know they’re working to restore the old graphics.

So if there is no toggle, then it’ll be the 2004 graphics which will be easier to handle.

Without the need for all the features like achievements, transmog, group finder, etc. the client should be a bit less bloated as well.

Since the guy notes the client has a lot of files removed compared to the 8.x BfA series, I imagine they’ve fully removed those things from Classic as opposed to simply disabled them in the UI.

Except that you could never log into BFA with the Classic client and expect it to work.

Nor could you log into the Classic server with the BFA Client and expect that to work.

The data sets are 99.9999999% different because they have to be.

That’s actually because its reusing the data files from the Retail client, like the PTR client does. The Demo was completely self contained.

Pretty amazing when you think about it, they’ve successfully managed to not only get vanilla running in the modern client, but the most up to date one means they could update the client with whatever modern is running which means we have the smoothest gameplay possible pretty much as long as modern lasts. It makes sense because eventually if the old client gets too outdated they would just have the same issue they did when they started.

It actually is a completely separate client executable. That’s what we always maintained.
