[Classic SoM] Fate of Seasonal Characters

Hey everyone, while Season of Mastery started with the premise of your characters being moved onto Classic Era servers, many of us are wondering if there could be another solution.

I’ve been playing Season of Mastery ever since it has started, and as the season progressed more and more people stopped playing. There is much more to talk about on seasonal servers, their problems, and what could be different about them, but I’d like to keep this topic to what happens to our characters after seasons specifically.

Looking at the future of seasonal servers (and classic) as a whole: I would much rather prefer one way transfers into the next expansion, over just having your characters deposited on Era realms.

Not to mention, if seasonal TBC servers are ever going to be made, where would those characters go? What about after Wrath?

After spending so much time on your character, it’s a real pity that you can’t take them onto the next expansion and have a chance to display your accomplishments.

People much prefer the Carrot on a Stick of always having progression to look forward to. The longer the Season goes on, the less you have of that, since it’s always in the back of your mind that you’re approaching a dead end.

Some advantages of allowing seasonal players to transfer onto newer expansions would be:

  • There is always progression to look forward to

  • FOMO items and achievements never become unavailable, creating an incentive of going back and getting whatever you missed out on

  • It’s much easier to jump into newer expansions with pre existing characters, especially ones you’ve grown attached to

What are your thoughts on this topic? I’m mostly trying to create some discussion around this topic with this post, so feel free to voice your opinion (even if you haven’t played any seasonal servers!).

Questions for the Classic Team:

  • Has the team discussed and considered the possibility of allowing us to transfer to tbc/wrath? Is there a (significant) technical limitation that’s in the way for that to happen, or is it a design choice?

  • Is the team satisfied with how Season of Mastery turned out? Are future seasons still being planned, and can you tell us about the different themes that are being considered?

I hope it’s not too much to ask, we’re dying to know more about what the Classic Team has in store for us!

I do think this is an interesting topic. But not sure there is that much to talk about.

Seasonal servers dump into Era servers because that model has worked in the past in Diablo. And is the simplest route.

I think an option to clone onto a seasonal TBC at the end of a seasonal Classic is a neat idea, but a) you would need a TBC Era at the end of that stage to make that make sense and b) you would need enough of a population to justify splitting it and to spend the development dollars.

Also super curious about future potential seasons though. I think launch timing was a significant barrier to Classic SoM.

There’s different options for where you could let people move onto after a season:

  • The one that’s currently planned, Classic Era

  • Seasonal TBC servers

  • TBC Era

  • Current latest Classic servers (which I’m hoping for), which would be WotLK by the time SoM ends

I do think the last one makes the most sense though.

I’d imagine Blizzard will just relive the expansion cycle all the way up to current Retail, with changes that the player base wants, because that seems to be the easiest thing to do with Classic.

Letting seasonal characters transfer to the latest version of Classic would incentivize people to go back and get things they’ve missed out on, and nothing would ever really be unavailable any longer (FOMO content).
