You can choose an optional talent that allows you to apply Earth Shield to yourself (yes, even as Enhancement). You can also cast it on other targets and there is even a talent that will allow you to cast it on yourself and a second target at the same time.
Almost makes me want to consider playing Retail again…

You were kind of right.
The cool thing about the talent in question is that it doesn’t prevent you from using Lightning Shield at the same time. I take those talents as Elemental and get Lightning Shield benefits as well as a bit of self-healing.
