Classic’s Longevity

Will Classic ultimately have longevity? After all the content is released and cleared is that it? Will Classic be over?

(Side question, would people want to see new content developed and explored in WoW Classic? Stuff that wasn’t there in the beginning?)

Absolutely it will have longevity. Just look at the success of private servers over the years.

No. Not a chance. Nothing added that wasn’t there when it was live.

I would support other stand alone servers that were classic/BC or Classic/BC/WOTLC. Just pure start over and not continuation or copy your character over ones.

It will be interesting to see what the community looks like 6 months after Nax releases. In vanilla only a tiny % of the population even set foot in there. Partly because of the difficulty in gearing up but also because of how little time there was between Nax and TBC.

One of my big concerns for the super long term is that BIS geared players might ruin pvp for newer players since there was no matchmaking or rating system at all in vanilla.

another one of these? Ugh. Can we at least wait until the game actually launches before we start wondering about content after classic?

The private servers only work because they launch a fresh server every 6-12 months. Which is about how long is takes semi-casual guilds to beat all content except maybe a couple Naxx bosses.

Hardcore guilds are raiding/clearing on week two.

Classic content + 1.12 talents = easy AF.

Why is difficulty always what people cling to when discussing vanilla? Nobody cares if it’s hard or easy, they care if it’s GOOD, they care if it’s FUN. BFA is not fun, so people want to spend their time in classic instead.

Doesn’t need to be “hard”

I’m not comparing it to BFA. Far as I’m concerned WoW wasn’t even on the radar as a game past Catacylsm. I’m comparing it to the hundreds of other options out there.

It isn’t Classic vs BFA. It’s Classic vs other games.

There are other options?

The servers launching in August of this year should always remain locked to Vanilla, forever, no exceptions. They should experience no new content, custom content, or anything other than what was true to vanilla circa 2006.

Longevity is not a concern, as is evident by the longevity of Project 1999 for EQ, which is going on 10+ years with a consistent healthy population. With Project 1999 being a community reverse-engineered project, an officially maintained and sanctioned project from Blizzard is only going to have more staying power.

That said, I am totally cool with new servers being launched in the future, be that TBC, WotLK, or whatever Blizzard feels there is demand for. The way those should be handled is through initially generating two types of servers at the launch of each new “type”:

  • Type 1: Fresh toons only, no transfer
  • Type 2: Transfer permitted, within some period of time of launch, as a one-time character move from any lesser progressed servers

This would permit those who want to “continue the journey” to do so, those who want to “stay locked” the ability to do so, and those who wanted to wait until their favorite expansion to even start a suitable avenue for fresh-server play.

Even further to that, I would totally okay with new servers for things like Classic+, if the demand is there.

The recurring theme is simply that the servers being spun up in August of this year should be rigidly locked to an authentic Vanilla WoW 2006 experience, forever. Demand can drive any new server type from there.

After Naxx is where the real end game begins. When you are BiS. That is when the fun of farming PvP really is the best.

I think matchmaking for PvP is dumb. Getting stomped and one shot is motivating. At least it should be. One of the main problems with PvP in retail is it started to cater to all the delicate snowflakes so it got ruined. We ended up with the 2 worst PvP expansions to date in Legion with templates and then BFA.

Gear should always matter heavily in PvP for counter play. Its an RPG. You need the right gear and skills to counter. If you get one shot then you need to gear up and get better.

Personally I like fighting great PvPers and losing. It makes me think and grow as a player.

Matching just removes that. It was bad for PvP. The problem is people don’t know how to take losses. Its their problem.

Its better to get stomped by some great players and learn something then for some artificial system to hold your hand and give you weak competition. You never get better that way. If your an average player and running into the best PvPer used to be cool and an experience. At least it should be.

There is an old saying if you are the smartest person in your group, you need to find a new group. Matchmaking just places you in dumb groups. It’s bad.

PvP needs to be brutal and unforgiving, if you walk out there unprepared you should explode on contact and get globaled. That is great PvP. Then you need to work on getting better.

I don’t want new content, mostly because I don’t trust them to do it right. I would be happy with them making new servers after 2-3 years so we could start over and do it all again.

It will last plenty of time because of a few things.

Many players are going to be behind the curve. When AQ opens, many will still be trying to clear BWL. When Naxx opens, many will still be trying to clear AQ. There are a few bosses in the late game that average players won’t see for a while and may take them a while to down, if they ever do.

Private server hardcore players will reroll and reroll and reroll forever. Many of them don’t want to do anything but start a fresh character again, level it, max it out, get Rank 14 and clear all content. When they do that, they will start another one.

There are too many good things to farm. ZG Tiger, ZG Raptor, Deathcharger, Wintersaber, legendaries, tier sets, crafting recipes, reputations etc.

There is information that at one time a 4th battle ground, hjyal zone, the emerald dream raid, karazan raid, and hellfire peninsula were all going to be in vanilla. But they were all scrapped in favor of a new expansion, the burning crusade.

#nochanges is vehemently against anything like this.

#okwithauthenticfeelingchanges would possibly like to see some of these things, but the problem is how do you do it without breaking molten core through naxx progression?

Yes it will have longevity but ultimately it won’t matter if it does or it doesn’t because this isn’t intended to be a sustainable version of WoW. It’s something they were able to throw together on the cheap and make work for people who wanted to see the old world again.

And no, there shouldn’t be anything added or developed for this that wasn’t available to play in Vanilla WoW.

With each Phase people will be interested to come back out and play the game. Those core players who are progressing will still be playing the whole time without breaks between content drops. After Naxx comes out is where the problems start.

There will be a point in the future that people will stop playing. While it wont be everyone there will be a marked decline in the population greater than what was before simply because the content has been cleared. The arguments go well i could clear it again on my alt or spend all day pvping. However, the reality is that there will be a much smaller group of core players who would stay with this version no matter what.

Still that population may dwindle further as Fresh severs come out as people enjoy that race to do it again. In the end there will be people advocating for ever lasting classic server because its what they and the people like them want. How big is this group of poeple? IT would seem not big enough to hold up a private server with a sustainable population for there own entertinament. Clearly the issue could be that private server numbers are small. However, it could also be indicative of the relative population of that group. EIther way we wont know until later.

I think as long as retail exists, there is a market for Vanilla WoW. Old and new players alike will revisit Classic every once in a while out of nostalgia or curiosity. I doubt we will ever see it fully empty.

Now, will it be POPULAR long term? That I can’t say. I imagine when some people clear Naxx they be like ‘meh’ and move on. However, it would take quite some time for everyone to clear Naxx so I think we’ll have a few years before anything tanks.

While all either of us can do is speculate, Project 1999 has actually seen growth over time despite hard-locked content. Hard-locking a server’s content without updates surely has marginal development upkeep compared to releasing new patches/content.

Despite consistent turnover, there’s always new people starting up on Project 1999 to replace the veterans that stop playing. While that’s just anecdotal from a different game, I think it’s inaccurate to assert that the population will inevitably decline unless new content is forced onto the server.

Same as above. As someone in that group of people, I would be content to play on a moderate population single server that’s Classic locked. While my personal view is that folks wanting hard-locked Vanilla are the majority of players who will play long-term on Classic. Those looking for new/fresh content are more likely to be touristy and visit/leave with each content patch. If population does wane, I would much rather Blizzard condense down to a single vanilla-locked box if needed and then offer the newer content servers as separate new servers. The moment a hard-locked authentic Vanilla is no longer an option is the moment I seek a pserver to fulfill that need.

I do not understand why you would ever want to remove/destroy all vanilla-locked servers. The plan I mentioned allows anyone who wants to progress the option to do so while allowing for at least one vanilla locked server to remain.
