Classic question about disenchanting

A friend of mine was talking about how, back in vanilla, his raid group used to occasionally take Enchanting just to break down outdated gear because there was no profession level requirement to do that until TBC. He’d like to know if the same can currently be done on classic.

I know the obvious answer’s most likely that there’s no level requirement because it’s 1.12, but he’d rather not rely on assumptions. If anyone can verify this, we’d appreciate it.

Yes. You can disenchant gear of any level with 1 enchanting skill. Disenchanting can also increase your enchanting skill. My level 5 hunter on beta has like 30 enchanting skill all from disenchanting BoE greens that I mailed to him.

Make a bank alt with Enchanting. Let him break down gear not worth selling on the AH then sell the mats instead. You’ll get more than if you vendor the gear.

That actually depends on how developed the market has gotten. It’s only lucrative while people are desperately leveling enchanting and then only to the point that the market can afford it. It also does not solve the problem of DEing items during a run, only those you have won.

On a related note, when was the loot option “Disenchant” added to the Need/Greed system? What about the trade window that allowed crafters to enchant or disenchant things (or rogues to open lockboxes)? Were those in by 1.12 or were they a TBC thing? I don’t recall.

The enchant window has been there since I’ve had this character which was prior to 1.12.

The DE button was added either during Wrath or with the 3.0 Cata patch, I can’t remember. It wasn’t there during TBC since I was the DE’r for many heroic dungeon runs and then having the group do a /roll for the shards, or passing them out equally if there were enough.
