All I can say for sure, since it was all I managed to achieve in Vanilla, is that rank 8 took me about 2-3 hours a day, I’d estimate. Fairly casual.
Separate but related question: How much easier is it to rank up on low pop servers, or servers with low populations of your faction? Does this scale?
I don’t think it’s any easier to rank on low pop servers. BC you’ll be fighting the same people back to back in WSG/AB.
Yeah same, this is my toon that I got to rank 8 playing with a pre-made / 4 hrs a day with vent server.
If Getting to rank 10 takes 2 hours a day. I’d like to know what battlegroup he was in. (I was in stormstrike back in the days) and it was a horde dominated BG (that’s why I was in premade groups)
Honestly, I do not know. I was on a pretty high pop server at the time, but classic servers are easily several times larger. So dunno.
Take your cross realm BG’s and shove it.

Please implement server only pvp with phase 3.
Please move DhKs from Phase 2 to phase 3. Let there be World PvP without DhKs.
Vanilla pvp content:
- Patch 1.1: No structured PvP.
- Patch 1.4: Added Honor system (no DhKs)
- Patch 1.5: Added Bgs and DhKs.
Classic pvp content:
- Phase 1: No structured PvP.
- Phase 2: Added Honor system (with DhKs)
- Phase 3: Added Bgs
Move DhKs from phase 2 to phase 3 to better emulate vanilla.
Dishonorable kills were added to the game in an effort to stop high level players camping quest NPCs or vendors without penalty, as this could become a major source of grief for lower level players on older servers.
Blizzard [announced today] that [ World of Warcraft ] Classic will be set in patch 1.12: Drums of War . In a developer update, Blizzard said it chose patch 1.12 “because it represents the most complete version of the classic experience.”
Players have been debating for months — [since the reveal of World of Warcraft Classic ] last BlizzCon — about what “Classic” truly means. Is it 1.1? Is it the final patch of “vanilla WoW? ” What is the true World of Warcraft experience for old-school players? With the announcement today, Blizzard has answered that question.
But Blizzard wants to do more than just recreate WoW 1.12, they want to give a good, modern experience for their players alongside the warts and glory of vanilla.
So we asked ourselves, would it still be possible to deliver an authentic classic experience if we took our modern code, with all its back-end improvements and changes, and used it to process the Patch 1.12 game data?
While that might seem counterintuitive, this would inherently include classic systems like skill ranks, old quests and terrain, talents, and so on, while later features like Transmog and Achievements would effectively not exist because they were entirely absent from the data. After weeks of R&D, experimentation, and prototyping, we were confident we could deliver the classic WoW content and gameplay without sacrificing the literally millions of hours put in to back-end development over the past 13 years.
Please note this isnt a release of patch 1.4, its a release of patch 1.12 rolled out across several phases as to have some form of progression - otherwise Naxx would be cleared already.

Yeah i had some guildies surprised there was no server only ques for bg as alliance on a pvp server. They just assumed #nochanges pvp would be the same as it started out in vanilla.
There are two problems with this:
#1 City Raiding cannot be a source of honor like it was during patch 1.4
#2 If Classic is a museum piece then phase 2 DhKs is a worse showcase of vanilla style play than if they where in phase 3.
DhKs didn’t solve much then but they hurt alot. It was a bad solution then and it won’t be a good solution now. However, I don’t want DhKs removed I just want them put into a more appropriate phase. I am a Classic ‘warts and all’ supporter.
Not discounting the impact that BGs have on honor grind, DhKs destroyed city raids.
City raids were a good source of honor before DhKs. With patch 1.5 city raids declined to near nothing. This is in part because BG honor is much much faster than Wpvp honor even with city raiding. But the DhKs are the nail in the coffin, as you cannot trust anyone in a city raid to not accidently (or on purpose) to kill a civilian NPC. This makes city raids impossible for honor grind.
If you enjoyed city raids during vanilla as a source of honor then DhKs need to be moved to phase 3 else we will miss that window of content where they are viable.
