Just wanted to bring some discussion to the forms what I read on wowhead based on what Tom Ellis , Josh Greenfield have posted and to toss out my opinion.
Wowhead Link
“The topic is Senior Game Producer for World of Warcraft Tom Ellis has recently shared Blizzard’s ideas on Wrath Classic realm consolidation ahead of Cataclysm Classic. They are looking for player feedback, and started out with explaining an idea they are toying with:”
“Combining Faerlina-US and Benediction-US, two high-populated servers that are both weighted 99% in favor of one faction. “One Horde, one Alliance, and almost equal in player size.” In the very next paragraph however, Tom notes that there is a real problem in players on those two realms not necessarily wanting that kind of PvP experience.”
“So the question is: what do the players on those servers want?”
For me some of the best moments are those random encounters out in the world vs other players that bring to life the core friction between the Horde and the Alliance. The largescale PvP battles, to fight off opposing factions invasions to the home cities. Even to be the invader fighting your way through the streets to get to the city’s leader and take them down. It really helped create a sense of server identity knowing you had to be on the lookout for certain players or guilds in key areas or zones, it made it more fun and enjoyable.
The lack of faction balance makes me feel like I am missing a core aspect of the game when it comes to what a PvP server means and is. It just feels bad.
I saw some of the issue was people are comfortable in their PvE mindset on the PvP servers having no opposite faction or opposition. Maybe let them transfer to a PvE server or give them people the option to go to one or the other? Something should be done, its boring.
In my opinion as a Faerlina player who came from Eranikus. This would be amazing to bring PvP back to the PvP servers an add some excitement back to the game. I’d couldn’t agree more in saying Benediction and Faerlina are fake PvP servers, and might as well be PvE. It just defeats the purpose of what PvP is.
My vote is to bring in the merge! Bring some spice back to the game. I would love seeing the servers get consolidated and have faction balance to bring WPvP come back for Cataclysm.

If they were to create a mega server like the one described, I would actually strongly consider getting into Cata Classic.

There have been a few other people who have said that as well.
How do you figure that? Do you think you see more players in the world on a megaserver? Because thanks to layers…you don’t. I see a more active world on a smaller server population with 1 layer than on a megaserver with tons of layers. That’s just the nature of how layers work.
You might be questing in Arathi Highlands and not see a single person, even though there’s a hundred people there split on 50 layers. Why? Because there’s 20,000 people in STV, and layers are spun up based on that. A single congested zone means the rest of the continent is a barren wasteland. Sharding would work better than layers. At least that’s based on each zone. But the actual solution is to have healthy server sizes, not grotesque megaserver ones. Which is an illusion because you don’t actually see or interact with those players.
You’re envisioning amazing world pvp by merging two already overpopulated servers. That’s not what’s going to happen. One faction will dominate certain layers, the other will dominate others. They’ll figure out the proportions, layer swap and continue to dominate the opposing faction.
If you want to talk about faction balance, you just manipulate the classic playerbase to get them to go where you want. What is the defining characteristic of classic players? They’re min/max efficiency orientated. So exploit that. Put some buff based on the current server faction imbalance of max level characters. Watch players flock to the opposite faction to gain any kind of advantage. Inherently the faction will balance itself out.

Layers would probably still be better than having 99.9% of one faction. Never seeing the opposite faction not because of a different layer, but because they don’t exist.

All the things people say they love about Classic realms are exactly the same things players can do on retail. Other than playing while patches are being released, you are missing nothing.
Just come play real WOW. Welfare WOW on classic realms are pointless. Nothing you do matters since its all contained to one expansion. On retail, you can take as much time as you enjoying the expansion you want and then if you choose, you can explore other xpacs. But on classic realms you cant do that. Plus, after all the changes, no matter what you do on a classic realm, it is not equivalent to doing it on retail or when that xpac was live on retail.
I hope more realize this sooner than later. I will never understand why people would waste so much time on a classic realm that is nothing like it was when live. Enjoy it as much as you want. But its like playing on a private server since its not connected in any way to REAL WOW aka Retail WOW
I think you’re in the wrong place dude. I fail to see how anything you’ve said is relative to balancing factions on Faerlina or Benediction or even this topic.
P.S. Retail is not good.
I would have to agree with what was already stated. This forum is about classic and if those people who play classic want to merge servers. Everyone already knows they can play retail if they want to.

At this point, the PvP servers like Bene / Faerlina are PvE. I understand that people have “rooted” themselves onto these servers knowing it’s basically a PvE server. Since the balance for servers like these are terrible. I would think that you could merge those like Faerlina / Bene together. Put in a mechanic that would work like War Mode. I never really played retail that much so I’ve haven’t used it. At this point in the server’s life, I really don’t see a problem with implementing something like this. You could incentivize people to leave it on by giving us more; xp, gold, materials, reputation, ect. This would also save the people who made their characters on a PVP REALM with not getting ganked in the open world while keeping their rates (for having War Mode OFF) normal. There will always be people who complain about anything you throw at them. This is the only solution I personally could come up with that could maybe put both PvP and PvE people at ease. I personally would rather have less servers and have 2-4 big mega servers. Obviously I wouldn’t do this to realms like Grobb because they have the healthiest server population from what I remember. Even if there isn’t a solution, I will be continuing into Cataclysm regardless.

I think a lot of people would agree with you on people rooting themselves. It really is basically a PvE server. Although id really rather not have a Warmode it is a solid option. Id really prefer to stick to the guns of a traditional PvP server. It would be great to merge the two servers into one and become what they were meant to be. I mean it’s a PvP realm for a reason right?

The simple short answer is layer hopping. We all do it. I would much rather have 15+ active layers to hop between instead of fake PvP server with 100% 1 faction.

Everyone should tweet back “too little too late,” as that’s the perfect way to describe this and damn near everything they do.
I’d be happy with that. I mean like you said id rather have the layers vs nothing.
I am so excited for the mega server if that happens i will be playing cata classic.
