Classic is an RPG…I’m not sure what retail is

Retail feels like it has lost its rpg identity and feels more like a”Diablo like” game now. Why did blizz go in this direction?

Classic vanilla feels like an adventure and retail feels like a race from one season to another. I’m glad we have choices but I can’t help but wonder what wow would have been like if it had continued on with the vanilla/tbc path as far as the rpg aspect goes. I feel like we were cheated out of something special.

This isn’t a bash on retail, just a “what if” post.

Edit:
I made this thread because I’ve been horde from the beginning. I made my first alliance character in Classic and as I play through I find myself enchanted.

For me, this is my first real alliance classic play through and I’ve fell in love all over again.

I just wish retail could make me feel a little more like this too I guess.

I reckon it’d probably be dead

Retail is a game good enough that we don’t feel the need to go on forums for other versions of the game to trash them.

Unlike classic.

How is this trashing retail? I play retail too…I’m just talking about the differences in the rpg/adventure aspect.

They just scratch a different itch is all I’m saying. One is for people who want an adventure and one is for people who like the competition of a seasonal game.

Also, if I was home I’d be playing and not on the forums. Please use some logic.

You can only do “Go get me 15 rabbit ears” so many times. Especially when only one in ten rabbits have ears

I can only spam the same 8-9 dungeons so many times myself so I completely understand why you’d feel that way but at least the quests give you some variety.

The world feels alive in classic. You can group up and go on an adventure to a far way land.

In retail I feel like I’m in the starting area of pubg before the queue pops. You’re just running around kind of pointlessly with no real meaning.

It is how games have moved over a generation of players… There are some fast-paced games that don’t rely on leveling journeys and are more popular than WOW has ever been.

The point of classic and retail to me has always been different experiences for different people who prefer those experiences, honestly. Classic has a different playerbase than retail, and that’s fine.

I really do not understand the frequent Diablo references that come up. WoW doesn’t feel anything like a Diablo game to me.

If you don’t want to rush around or engage with seasonal content…then don’t. The game is full of things to do. We’re all choosing our own adventures.

I rarely engage with seasonal group content. I’m planning to get into it this season for the first time in years because it sounds like a nice change of pace (and I’m excited about the new raid).

Player housing hits before long. You can have all the RPG you want.

Retail has a lot of quality of life improvements. That said, the push for esports is why it isn’t an RPG anymore. I also miss actually giving a crap about what happens or what I’m doing in the game beyond a silly dungeon scorecard. But they did what they thought they had to do to save the game, I guess? I don’t know.

I do agree on this part.

I’m an active player of classic and there is a different hit you get from the ‘old style’ of game. You feel a bit more like the game is a drawn out book, with little bits of joy like suddenly getting a blue drop which might actually be your BiS for a while.

It’s a good feeling.

However it’s also fleeting- I.E while it’s nice it also isn’t the right game for a lot of people also.

You might be limiting yourself in Retail then unnecessarily. There’s almost a universe of explorables in both the story (lore master chasers)/fun activities (glory and secrets of azeroth) and achievement point hunting to do.

Funnily enough it’s the journey in those that ends up being more enjoyable- especially the secrets^^

its clearly the direction paying customers are willing to pay to go in.
Nuff said.

I only say this because you spam dungeons, group up mobs and aoe them down. That’s basically what you do in Diablo. You just spam damage and aoe down the enemies then quickly kill the boss at the end. It’s basically Diablo with extra steps.

because that’s what a larger number of players want.

So, don’t.

I still haven’t seen all 8 of the dungeons added at The War Within launch.

There’s a lot more to the game than dungeons.

It’s a live service adventure MMO, that’s what I would call it these days. RPG doesn’t belong in the title and I don’t really care if you “plaAY a RolE aS a ChaRaActerrrrr”, it’s not an RPG. It has stats, but they’re basically just placebo at this point, the only one that isn’t placebo is Haste.

dungeons might be 2% of my game. I dont raid. I dont pvp. I dont pet battle.
Yet somehow I manage to play the game so much that I get burn out frequently enough. Right now Im burned out yet again.
So I have no clue how you think that your description there has to be even a majority of the game for many of us.
