Classic FISHING question

I just got trained in fishing in Redridge Mountains by Matthew Hooper, bought a fishing pole, equipped it. But standing at water’s edge, clicking on the fishing pole in the spell lineup DOES NOTHING.

What am I missing? Do I have to begin fishing in Stormwind or something?

Did you equip your pole?

Yes, as stated in my OP, the pole is equipped. It’s very weird, possibly a BUG of some kind?

Press P and use the fishing ability. Not the icon for the fishing pole

You should be able to cast anywhere but won’t catch fish, ie they will escape unless you have the required fishing skill.
There’s a few posts on the forms about fishing being buged, I would try it in a different zone

Maybe the fishing skill isn’t high enough for redridge, if it’s anything other than base level 1, which it probably is higher than 1, than you’ll need to go get some skill points in a lower level zone, like SW.

Ahhh, THANK YOU! lololol I’ll give that a try … in Sormwind

The skill requirement in Redridge waters is pretty high. It might even be 100. I’m not sure.

Here is my recommendation (as someone who has ALWAYS fished and is currently 300 fishing in Classic):

Go to Goldshire and fish in the pond behind the blacksmith from 1-75. This will take almost exactly 20 minutes.

Buy the “Longjaw Mud Snapper” recipe if you don’t already have it from the trader in Goldshire.

Go to Stormwind and empty your bags. Keep ALL the fish you caught.

Go to the fishing trainer in the canal between Trade District and Mage District. Buy the “Brilliant Smallfish” recipe.

Stand there on that dock and fish from 75-100 skill. Buy two (and only two) lures. Buy the “Bristle Whisker Catfish” recipe. Empty bags. Keep all the fish.

Head to Old Town, visit the cooking trainer. Buy apprentice cooking. Learn the Brilliant smallfish recipe. Cook ALL of the smallfish. If you fished where I said you should, you will have more than enough to get you to 50 cooking.

Talk to the trainer and boost cooking to Journeyman 150.

Learn the Longjaw Mud Snapper recipe. Cook them all. This should get you to 100+ cooking.

Learn the Bristle Whisper recipe. Cook them all. This should get you capped or close to 150.

NOW…you may go to Lakeshire and fish in the waters there. Use a lure until you hit 130 fishing, and you’ll have fewer “fish got away” casts. Fish here until you hit 150 skill.

Cook all of your Bristle Whiskers when you’re fishing capped. This will cap your cooking.

Hope that helps.

Well, typing “P” (in Stormwind) and clicking on the equipped fishing pole icon (under “Attack”) still does NOTHING, because I’m told I “need a target.” – How can you target a fish? – Obviously, I’m missing something BASIC.

Don’t press enter. Just Press “P”. This’ll open your spellbook. Under the “general” tab (at the top) should be the skill ability “fishing”. Drag /that/ down onto your bars and click /that/ to fish. (after your fishing pole is equipped)

Yes, this. Your attack icon now looks like a fishing pole, because your equipped weapon is your fishing pole–but it’s still “attack.” You need to click “fish.”

Snitches, thanks again. I must not have gotten enough sleep or something. Fishing finally works!
