I am very confused.
So if I want to play Classic, and get the feeling of progression, do I play SoM?
But if I want to play Classic that is stuck forever on the last phase (Naxx) but people have already progressed onto TBC, do I play in the ‘Classic Era’ servers?
I’m sort of confused about this.
When I checked the realm pop for Classic Era , Jom Gabbar was like the only realm people play on and there’s not that many people and they’re on AQ atm. SoM looks sort of dead?
I’m just not sure what to play and I’m very confused.
The real answer, my son, is to not play either.
Both are doomed to a permanent stagnation that, eventually, no one will ever touch and will eventually be closed by Blizzard. This is the very nature of this game’s design philosophy.
Only fresh starts every so often can hope to keep any population long-term.
It might be a half-decent idea to design servers which reset everyone’s character to level 1 while maintaining the quests and professions those players leveled or something.
But who are we kidding. The real answer is to play a better game where people actually roleplay, have real concequences such as the possibility of permanent character death, where the goal isn’t to grind like a robot for better gear/gold, but instead to tell and share stories while socializing with other people.

And Jom Gabbar is the most-played SOM server? Didn’t AQ release just this week?
The War Effort just started.
Some people are a bit turnt that they believe they will be waiting the full four weeks for the Gates to open automatically and the raids become accessible.
The problem is the complete lack of communication from blizzard. Nobody had stock piles or organized a turn in coalition with horde/alliance communication ( things that happened in classic to create a smooth opening) because blizzard didn’t tell anyone what the plan was until three days before the war effort started. And people are not happy about it, but Ive learned to just roll with it. The wpvp so far in silithus has been sensational.

They’ve dumped the som project and are going thru the motions before they can roll out their next fresh with (highly probable) bad ideas attached

Wouldn’t that just be the next season?
Som2? Most likely. We will see how horrific this season will be, because I know for certain it won’t be a classic plus. That would have been mentioned with the wotlk news and new xpac. So a lazily thought out proposal inc. anything worth any value will always be advertised
Hiya Koshka,
Apologies for the poor responses to your question. A lot of lads here on the forums are salty about Activision-Blizzard’s mismanagement of Seasonal/Era and rightly so. To your inquiries:
- SoM is basically Vanilla+. It has an increased xp buff worldwide, additional mechanics for raids to make fights more difficult, and is still releasing server-wide content (AQ War effort + Scourge Invasion event later)
- Era is Vanilla WoW. It will not have any more server-wide events, but there are still active players, weekly raids/bgs/dungeons from multiple guilds, and the bartering system is alive and well.
- Regarding servers, both versions are being consolidated with free transfers, but it was poorly communicated to the wider player base which server to play on. For Classic Era, I recommend Whitemane. For Season of Mastery, I recommend Jom Gabbar. Both populations are smaller than TBCC, but are very tightly knit and I highly recommend you give a good try on one or both. If you have any further questions, feel free to respond or send me in-game mail on Classic Era-Whitemane.
Light be with you,
Rowaine

permanent stagnation is great!!! makes all of the gear we spent out time acquiring actually worth something other than transmog
