Aesthetics do matter. WoW was a great graphical improvement to other MMOs when it released. If WoW looked like Halls of Torment, less people would have played it and keep coming back to it. People didn’t go back to play D2 until D2R because the graphics were so bad. Aesthetics DO matter.
We know that RDF didn’t take out the social aspect because there is no social aspect in WotLK classic, which does not have RDF. Even TBC saw the loss of the social aspect that vanilla has. Blaming RDF is incorrect.
i agree with you but i think i know what he’s trying to say: wow was so…raw…that appearance was the least of your worries. it was like bottom tier in importance, overwhelmed by eek not enough gold for my epic mount, crap i missed the head buff, and etc.
Just because aesthetics was the least important thing to how good vanilla is doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be included in classic+. Why settle for less? That’s why this whole thread started with aesthetic improvements, because it’s the least gameplay altering thing.
as i said, i agree with you. just pointing out why it might seem like a departure from the flavor, which was egads. lol i have a classic vanilla era mage. shes wearing a lime green robe with purple and red bracers. a purple and blue belt and brown shoes lol oh and a silver/red staff. its color soup.
I think transmog in retail is a little far, though. Not sure why. Some people look really ridiculous. I didn’t mind as much the drab look to players in classic. I like transmog… I just think it is over the top in a way. Maybe it’s the access to crazy looking tier sets but transmog for the sake of letting colors match could be nice.
Liking something from retail doesn’t mean I like retail as a whole. Is that so hard to understand? Let me know if it is and I’ll try to pick the idea apart more for you.
I don’t like retail, so no, I won’t play it. However, there are still some aspects or features of retail that are good, that can benefit classic+, without it turning into retail.
Which is a genuine question. I realize that there are some things you like about Retail, and that there may be some you don’t like (perhaps you could expand on what those things are), and likewise about Classic.
I think that most people simply do not share the same views when it comes to, “these are bad about Retail, but these are good.”
I was a curious as to what you actually like about Classic that you can’t find in Retail.
I mainly play wrath classic. I prefer classic vanilla, TBC, and wrath over retail by far. I want era servers to preserve how good those 3 versions of the game are, and to make private servers useless. But I also want to continue progressing through something that is classic (hence classic+), that’s why I suggested things that wouldn’t turn classic+ into retail, even though they are in retail.
For you, but those are things that some may find very much Retail…
I mean, I understand that to you, you like Classic, even though I’ve asked several times and you haven’t given any sort of explanation whatsoever as to what it is you like about Classic that you can’t find in Retail… indeed, you’ve just completely ignored my questions and made some very generic statements about liking Classic and not Retail.
For me, the way we form groups in Classic is iconic of Vanilla, and early WoW. I can understand that it isn’t everybody’s cup of tea, just like not everybody like to play Tanks or Healers or Melee DPS, or Ranged, or whatever someone might like that someone else might not…
I also don’t like Retail’s graphics or animations… so much so that originally, I used to play only Undead and Tauren, but dislike their graphics so much in Retail now that I won’t even play them, though to be fair I haven’t tried Dragonflight, so I’m unfamiliar with what Retail means right now.
In any case, thanks for sharing your idea of some Retail changes to WoW Classic that you personally would like to see.
It’s hard for me to describe what about it I like. For example, the PVE content of classic is easier than retail (in terms of number of mechanics), yet the world as a whole in classic feels more dangerous than in retail. The bosses and even the environment out in the world are more dangerous to each individual person, than in retail where someone could be melee’d by a boss without dying and you can aggro whole zones without dying. How is that so? Maybe it’s not the difficulty or easiness of content that decides whether it’s enjoyable.
I used to think the creation of groups via chat was good. I wasn’t sure that the claim that RDF ruined the social aspect was accurate. There is less of a social aspect in Wrath classic , and even back in TBC classic, despite not having RDF. So are we really correctly identifying what makes vanilla so much better than retail? It IS better in my opinion, but I’ve not been able to accurately pinpoint why, since there are contradictions. All I know is I’ve had more fun in vanilla, TBC, and wrath classics than in retail.
Idk if it helps, but I’ve tried to like retail. As you can tell by this character, I do have retail characters and try to give retail a shot every now and then. However there are things in retail that make me want to not bother, or just log off.
For example, in retail lately, if I want to progress, I have to grind some renown out, which means doing quests that I’m not in the mood to do. So I can either do something I don’t want to do, or log out and do something more fun.
If there wasn’t a mandate to do those quests, I’d do them eventually, because I like a quest or two sometimes.
You might ask, why play WoW if I don’t like quests? Well I enjoy the team aspect of WoW, not the questing aspect, so I only do quests that are necessary to let me reach max level and start the team stuff. I enjoy the team aspect so much that I’ll endure the quests to get to the part I enjoy. Making the enduring part unbearable just makes me want to log off.
in a classic+ scenario, changes to graphics doesnt automatically mean retail. lots of games update their graphics without effecting gameplay. but i agree with you about retail animations and models. gnome females are…terrible in retail. and blood elf female faces lost their personality. one of the changes they made in retail, removed the cool shadowform fx from vanilla, which was a sort of rainbowy purple, and replaced it with goopy dark purple that looks bad.
look at this. the retail model is like a clone lol the original tbc model is full of personality
