Classic Crash on Windowed or Monitor Switch

So the title… My client is crashing saying “world of warcraft was unable to start up 3d acceleration” when i try to switch it to windowed or fullscreen on 2nd monitor. Googled and saw the common fixes and did those. I deleted reinstalled video card drivers and did the compatibility box checking, still no dice. Talked to a few people who also have this same issue. Playing on other stress tests I was able to play on 2nd monitor and windowed.

Yep, a number of us have that issue. Most likely a bug they need to look into rather than something you’re doing.

Thanks for echoing might just have to rearrange my monitors tomorrow xD

Try using Shift-Windows-Right Arrow/Left Arrow to move it between screens rather than setting a default. I can’t fix the Windowed though.

Some hero’s wear capes and others wear Hide of the Wild, that worked for moving to other monitor many thanks.

With windowed mode. if you go into your world of warcraft folder then classic then WTF, open your config.wtf file and change the gxmaximize value to 0 then save your file it should start in windowed mode. worked for me!

it crashed when I tried to turn V-sync on.

Rumour has it that it’s an issue with discord overlay. Couple of people confirmed they were using the overlay and when turning it off the error stopped.

Wow, thank you. I tried literally everything and nothing worked. I disabled Discord Overlay and now I can change my settings without any issue.

yep, if anyone is still having “world of warcraft failed to start 3d accelerator” errors, overlays are currently the cause.

stuff like discord, or nvidia overlays for example.

+1 for disabling the discord overlay fixing the issue. disabled the overlay, switched the default monitor then turned the overlay back on. all working fine now $$

thank you for the fix. Discord overlay… who’d have thought.

Thank you Eloraell o7

Hey homies. You wanna fire up Classic in windowed. Go to the launch parameters in the launcher app, add in

-windowed

I can run multiple instances of WoW Classic on one screen easily with that.

Disabling the Discord overlay worked for me!! thank you so much!

this is still happening to me. i have disabled discord and nvdia overlays. im not sure what else to do. also my frame rate is only 100fps with a rtx2080 and an i7 9700k

In the blizzard game launcher. Go to game settings and put in -windowed in the launch command
