Any word on if Clear casting is nurfed or buffed in current version of classic? I’m frost aoe spec and haven’t had time to invest into the talent yet.
I have not heard anything about it being nerfed or buffed. I think it is working as intended though. It pretty much needs to be maxed at 10% though of course, for it to be even noticeable.
I would say it is worth getting for most talent builds if you can spare the points.
Clearcasting is a standard part of any of the meta builds. Pretty much required for mana efficiency.
No i mean in Vanilla clearcasting had a chance to proc on contact per mob. It later got changed to per hit. Thats a huge difference. Basically if you were aoeing 10+ mobs you could get clear casting proc off every aoe spell. Trying to figure out how it’s currently working
I don’t recall Clearcasting EVER proccing off each hit on mobs.
If it ever worked like that I think I’d remember, since I played my mage as my main since early Vanilla and always had Clearcasting.
If it worked on hit instead of on cast, mages would have had basically infinite mana during AOE on large packs. And that never happened. I recall mana always being an issue and always needing to drink after AOE, especially during Vanilla. And this applied to both methods of AOE (Blizzard or Arcane Explosion).
The only mage mechanic that I recall ever working on each hit instead each cast or tick was the Lightning Capacitor trinket from TBC before they nerfed it.
That trinket shot off a lightning bolt at a random target after accumulating 3 charges, and you got a charge every time a target got critted by one of your spells. If you were spamming arcane explosion at a large pack, you could get a dozen crits with one cast and the result was a bunch of lightning bolts from the trinket firing off every arcane explosion you spammed. This made it easily the BiS trinket by a huge margin for AOE. Blizzard nerfed it by adding an internal cooldown on gaining charges.

It will proc on the first hit, not each hit after. So for example if you cast frost nova and it hits 11 mobs, there’s a 10% chance for it to trigger from each one of those mobs from that first initial hit.
I don’t think it worked quite like that either. If it did, then you could spam arcane explosion on 20 targets and you would get a clearcasting proc virtually every cast effectively giving you unlimited mana while AOEing.
But based on my experience, that never happened.
Well…no, you wouldn’t. Each mob would have a 10% chance. That doesn’t mean if there’s 10+ mobs 10x10 = 100%.
You still are stuck with RNGesus. As none of them may trigger a proc.
You are both correct and incorrect.
It’s not 100% chance to proc. But the chance that you will get a proc with 10 tries per cast is much, MUCH higher than 10%. My guess is probably over 80%
Unfortunately, I don’t remember my college statistics so don’t remember how to calculate the answer.
We need a mathematician!
I second that!
my calculator is out of batteries
It’s been a while since I took a statistics class but I believe you would solve it this way:
Each mob hit has a 90% chance of not proccing clearcast. If you have 10 mobs that would be 0.90^10 = 0.348, meaning you have a 35% chance of not getting a clear cast proc, or one in three.
We don’t need any math that’s exactly how it used to work. All we need is someone with clearcasting to do some 20+ mob aoe pulls and see how easy fishing the proc is. It was eventually fixed to where it was based on the first target hit and had nothing to do with how many mobs there were. Just need to figure out how it was in this patch.
Whoa hold on, If we use pythagorean theorem then multiply 3 times 7 of these hypothetical mobs and then divide that amount by 22, that should give us the correct answer I would guess
All hail the math wiz!
So I’m going with an AoE build for leveling, and if clearcasting works off hit for Arcane explosion then it’d be worth taking for sure. But if not, is it really worth picking up while leveling?
Honestly I would say yes, pick it up. Even at the 4% I’m in so far I have had it proc pretty decently. It really needs to be the max 10% obviously but every time it goes off it’s a huge help, especially when leveling.
It would be very nice as well in longer fights where you just sit and cast.
