My 9 year old son will be giving Classic WoW a go with me once released. Any recommendations as to what class/spec will be the most kid friendly? I’m sure someone has been in this situation before. What worked for you?
I would say any DPS class. Healing and Tanking if done wrong can draw alot of abuse.
BeastMaster Hunter.
BM Hunter. Was fun for me back in the day having a pet with me at all times. Plus the pet does most of the work for you.
I woukd think hunter would not be a good choice. With stutter stepping and pet management, no?
If he’s playing with you, probably mage. It’s simple enough to play while also being powerful.
Hunter is easy to play to the very simplest of aspects but it’s not easy to master.
Game is rated T for Teen.
Be a responsible parent and don’t roll Horde for Barrens chat, remove him from Trade chat, and don’t let him roll on an RP server.
Especially the last one. Unless you want Little Naisadist watching a swordfighting competition between ladies. Without swords. Actual example.
Thanks Coalfury, I’m gonna keep my eyes peeled. I plan to have some talks with him too.
I’d recommend a rogue. Powerful, can choose when to start a fight, good for getting connected with a class, strong in both PVE and PVP content. Plus kids love more of the in your face fighting classes. They are also very easy to play and have pretty basic playstyle so it wouldn’t be complicated.
I actually think ranged DPS is good for little kids but maybe I’m underestimating. If he grew up playing video games and does streetfighter combos or whatever Rogue could be fun, lot of buttons compared to a mage though.
If you have played any table top RPGs that would be a good guide. Mine went in reverse, but she sat on my lap watching me play MoP, and just loved watching my mage more than anything. Fast forward to last year, getting into DnD with her cousins she wanted nothing more than launching fireballs at her enemies. She’s going mage for Classic, too, on her own choice.
I would recommend the DPS classes to start. If no experience with prior RPGs, trt and think about fictional characters they might want to emulate, or consolers they’ve enjoyed. Try and get a good playstyle and thematic match to what they’ve enjoyed before.
Mage is somewhat easy to not cause a messes for others.
Seeing how mage is range and doesn’t have pet management, and no fear ability should be simple as frost as frost was the easy mage level spec or the other 2.
And paladins were originally suppose to be the beginner class.
Perhaps shaman though shaman totems do need to be manage like pets because they can cause wipes probably more frequent to hunter pets in dungeons and out doors.
Personally I think the child should play what ever gets their attention and learn to play it because learning is good for children.
Recommending hunter is stupid. The pet takes micromanagement. If they don’t feed the pet, it will run away. If they forget arrows, you’re gonna have a melee hunter. They will likely multi-shot your crowd control. They won’t know how to not clip autoshots or how to stutter step. Their pet will accidentally aggro the wrong pack. They will forget to dismiss their pet before jumping down at Rend.
Have them play a mage. Casting frostbolt over and over is easier for a youngster than an actual rotation that hunters have. Did they forget water? They can conjure it!
If they go mage, maybe avoid a PVP server type. You will be the target of quite a few people and being camped can make the experience rough.
The pet takes micromanagement.
Not really. BM pet will do all the heavy lifting for you.
If they don’t feed the pet, it will run away.
I think a kid from the Minecraft generation can handle remembering to have a stack of food on him. It’s not some sort of deep complex thing.
If they forget arrows, you’re gonna have a melee hunter.
Non-issue for a BM hunter.
The rest of it is all stuff that can be learned.
I don’t recommend 9 year olds play this game. I guess it’s not my kid. So whatever.
I leveled a mage around that level, and survived being attacked.
I was camped less on my mage on pvp server then every other class.
Those are all terrible arguments. Even BM has pet micromanagement. You’re also overestimating the average person’s ability at not forgetting things or making mistakes.
Mistakes on a hunter is worse for a group/raid than mistakes on a mage.
I would recommend the following classes for the novice player:
Hunter is very easy to pick up and play, hence why they were popular among younger players. The pet is pretty easy to manage.
Warrior is nice but can be difficult if you pull higher level mobs. It has a fairly easy skill curve when leveling.
Mage is about the same as a warrior just at range. Very easy skill curve.
Paladin is about as easy as hunter with a few whoops buttons
Recommend after playing one of the above classes first:
Rogue-fairly easy leveling curve, more situational playstyle in group settings (sap, stuns, kick, etc)
Priest-More to manage than mage but not as much as warlock
Shaman-Plays similar to priest except totems.
Wouldnt Recommend:
Druid-Difficult class for anyone
Warlock-way too many situational things
Side note: One thing to keep in mind is you have to level these characters. They can all be learned and played accordingly. The journey is what makes the player competent and you have to make mistakes to learn to not make them in the future.
I seriously doubt the kid will ever raid. He’ll probably just tool around at low level, and slowly make his way to 60. Best class for that is a hunter who has the pet play the game for him, not a squishy mage.
