While we all know that Classic WoW is months away from release, like you, I’m super excited to start playing and enjoying the nostalgia again. What I can’t figure out yet is what class I should dedicate myself to as a main being as I’ve played every class in the game at this point. So, I figured I’d ask you all for your thoughts. I suppose this can easily turn into a class choice thread as well.
So while I was a huge fan of vanilla PvP on my Warlock, I’m thinking about trying something different this time around. Based upon the following, what do you all suggest? Oh, and if you think I should go back to that Lock again, please let me know as well…
CLASSES I NEVER ENJOYED: Shaman, Warrior, Rogue
CLASSES I LIKED: Lock, Mage, Paladin, Hunter
CLASS I NEVER GOT TO END-GAME: Priest (Although mind-controlling folks off a bridge was fun!)
My Goals:
1. Survival – Simply put, I’d like to play a class that can survive should I get ganked or our group screw up a terrible pull. In my mind, running away from a likely death is a victory. Yes, I have no pride. ;)
2. Equally Useful (Universal) – So what I mean by this is that the class is desired in PvE as it is in PvP. Essentially, it has a skill, ability or utility that makes it something needed in both situations.
3. Gear Dependency – Some classes (I won’t mention here…) really only shine once they get some of the better end-game gear. While they are decent prior, they simply don’t come into their glory until you’re at that peak of perfection. Personally, I’d like something that is effective even w/o the best of the best gear. Not being the highest DPS’r in the group won’t hurt my ego as I’ve come to accept that my “dice” rolls are simply cursed.
Hunter hands down.
Edit:
1: Feign Death lol.
2: One of if not the best WPVP class and amazing Flag guard and FC hunter (pun intended) Used to kite certain mechanics and give buffs etc.
3: They are not top tier dps in PVE sadly. But overall gear dependency they are balanced well if my memory serves me well.
I'd like to add...
4: They have some of the best immersion tools in the game with ammo and feeding pet etc.
5: Best leveling and content soloing class.

Just would point out that if we multiple classes by 3 to represent specs then 7/9 of the classes you disliked were melee while 10/12 of the ones you liked were ranged so let’s assume you prefer range over melee.
1. Survival, of the ranged classes, hunter and warlock were most survivable.
2. Utility, mages brought utility via portals, CC, and food/water but locks also had summons, soul stones, and health stones.
3. All classes were gear dependent.
In conclusion you should be Paladin, Druid, or priest as I’ll want all the pocket healers I can find.

I like how you slipped that in.
Regarding the classes you don't enjoy, are those classes you tried back in Vanilla or only retail? Because they feel much different today than they did back then.
I'm mostly asking because everything you're looking for seems to point towards rogue.
You can vanish and sneak away from players and mobs alike, making for some great survivability (not to mention stun-locking can help you solo things other classes may not be able to).
They're great at both PvE and PvP
And having played a rogue in Vanilla, I don't remember a time when I didn't feel like a badass, regardless of gear. Great damage, fantastic utility (can't tell you how wipes I saved with well-timed blind, gauge, interrupts and stuns.) and if things go wrong just POOF! Vanish and you're gone.

My problem with point 2 on rogue is while yes they fit the bill they are likely going to be so common and competitive over gear that it will be ridic.
I think you want a holy paladin. No one but rogue can actually easily escape from gank, but at least hpalas have HoF, cleanse, and bubble-HS.
An issue with hunters is, they're not really desirable in PvE.

Oh, I'm sure they will, just like before. My guild had 8 rogues in the raid at one point. If you wanna go rogue and plan on raiding, make sure to save yourself a raid spot early on!
Most likely you will want to go with Priest then. They have pretty decent survivability, you will always be wanted in PvP and PvE (especially if you are Dwarf), and will still have some gear dependency like any other class. Just that the gear you can obtain is not quite as competitive compared to say a Rogue. Rogue is also a good choice, but as mentioned you will face issues in which upgrades will be scarce to obtain.

You can literally earn your epic mount standing in Gadgetzan selling portals. Its a beautiful thing.
Unless you are not a mage, then you are just cursing these people under your breath, making 5x+ the amount the reagent costs.

I actually played a rogue through TBC and while the class was really fun, it was like running into a Waffle House in the East Coast of the U.S. - they were everywhere! I swear, it just felt like everyone either was a rogue for their main or had one as an alt. It was a great solo class but on those times I wanted to run UBRS or MC, nobody wanted another rogue or I was competing with too many others for the same drops. If I mentioned I was a "combat" rogue, it was instant hate from all the warriors in the group.
I'll admit to playing a hunter on one of the private vanilla servers for quite a while until I heard that the classic server was coming out. It was a fun class with a good cap on mastering all your skills. The problem was, like was already mentioned here, they weren't all that needed in raiding except for perhaps AQ.
The priest was pretty fun but with 1.12, we didn't have that dual build option and so changing from shadow to healing all the time got pretty darn pricey.
So... I guess that leaves me back to a warlock or a mage. My mage on retail never got beyond level 40 but as a frost spec, it felt like a crazy fun class to play with all that CC. That, and being able to AoE grind was quite nice. Still, I didn't get a mage to end-game until Wrath so I've not a clue on how effective they were for raiding/pvp in vanilla
I'd start with the classes you like, and go real old school: roll a four-side die. ;)
Hunter/Warlock/Druid/Shaman those three classes have the best survivability in Horde/Alliance(accept shaman). Hunter/Druid have great mobility/damage and damage output with low gear dependence. Warlock dots + infinite fear + voidwalker/sacrifice you were tanky and damage dealy, but no mobility. Shamans had mobility/survivability and ok damage.
Plus all 4 late game were wanted in raids for something and were decent at pvp. The worst class to level imo was warrior/Paladin. High Gear dependence, combat was pretty much just auto attacking everything to death, you always sat down and ate after a combat or two. Plus incredibly low mobility made things slow.

Druid was another class I never really put much time into until Wrath as I didn't like playing a hybrid cow and as a primarily Horde player, rolling a nelf felt like committing blaspheme. Am I right though that at end game, folks only wanted resto druids and not feral?

Best post seen on these forums in months.
As a vanilla rogue, right up until the bc pre patch and cloak, the only class i could never kill consistently was warlock. Dunno how you fared against other classes but fear, dot dot, fear, deathcoil was straight up savagery. Throw in the succubus and id say my odds dropped to 20%. Its almost like worldofroguecraft (a warlock if memory serves correct) led to the creation of the anti-rogue lock.
As for point 2: summons alone make you invaluable. Throw in soul stone and healthstones... youre in demand straight off. You also have a super clutch off tank in dungeons. Group utility out the whazoo.
Point 3, as someone said we were all pretty much gear dependant.
So why not roll a lock? You know the class backwards, your happy with it, and its an underrated powerhouse. Maybe because they were one of the first to get a love patch they slipped under the radar versus the more obvious choices. But i dont remember them even being that popular towards the end of the expansion. Rogues then enhance shamans then shadowpriestsmeltface... with warriors mages and priests always in demand. Warlocks just never quite got their meme-nt in the sun. Pallies got their bubble hearth and even druids got their cat is for fite. But locks... totally under the radar.
