Class loot? Not spec or loot-spec

Trying to get perspective on an issue I’ve been struggling with lately.

Shadowlands introduced less loot, more important/impactful loot.

Recently on several occasions I have been rewarded loot not for my spec or loot-spec. E.g. dagger on my outlaw rogue, 2h on my prot warrior, etc…
After digging a bit I discovered that other than The Great Vault, Raid bosses, these loot roles do not follow your current spec or loot-spec by design.
Rather they follow a “class” loot role.

As I understand loot sources, in a simplified way, for the purposes of this post:

Fixed (labeled): World Quests, quests, some chests, some rares that drop 1 thing for example. The item is ‘labeled’, such as a conduit. Or memory from a boss.
RNG (random): selected upon looting: Bosses, calling Chests, (emmissaries in BfA) for example. There is a chance at nothing of course.

My issue I guess is that callings and others are “class” specific not “loot” or “spec” specific loot.
Meaning you commit effort towards a chance at less loot, that may also not even be for your spec.

To express/expand what I’m trying to say:
Would you run a dungeon to get loot for any class/spec? I.e. cloth on your paladin… No.
Do you expect to get a shield on your priest? No.
Do you expect to get a bow or gun on your mage? No.
Do you expect a cloth robe on your warrior? No.

So here are my questions and purpose for this post:

Why are RNG loot possibilities not following my spec or chosen loot-spec?

What’s the reasoning behind it?

If blizzard is opening up loot to classes and not be spec specific, why not the whole hog and give Mages guns, and Priests shields?

Because they literally can’t even use those items.

But getting a dagger on an Outlaw rogue means I can use it in Sub if I wanted to try it out. Or even as offhand actually now that I think about it.

I appreciate that mages literally can’t equip the items, it was an exaggeration.
Prot warriors literally can’t equip 2h swords, not without becoming not Prot Warriors.
Outlaw, can equip a dagger, but abilities such as Dispatch “literally” become disabled. Can’t be used. So equipping it, is really beside the point.

The dagger isn’t part of the Outlaw rogue spec, or my loot-spec when I looted it. That was the point.

Outlaw can use daggers in Offhand. Main hand can’t be a dagger to use Dispatch.

Blue only comes to channels to pimp out things that you can buy for in-game.

I’d use a gun on a mage. Harry Potter gets much more fun to watch when you watch the version where they use guns.

I would too Knottynoodle, it would be incredible

I don’t think getting loot is the issue. I’m literally fine with getting 2 upgrades a week. It’s when you only have a few slots left and you simply can -not- fill them with decent loot that it gets frustrating. Reroll tokens helped mend this before. Valor points did too. I’d rather have a better chance at getting a nice weapon from one or two bosses a week than 4 chances at sidegrades a week.

This is only true for conduits and world quests and such. Dungeons, raids, they all follow loot spec. Outlaw rogues can use daggers as off hands.

This includes calling chests. I provide the bnet article above.
As I said before, I am ok with WQ’s or “labeled” rewards being for off spec. Its my choice to chase after it.
I’m not ok with chests, RNG, or loot table things handing me an off-spec/class item.
That is why loot-spec was created, to get stuff on roll’s for your off-spec. Not RNG.

This is where my confusion, frustration really come in. I don’t understand why I’m getting rewards for specs I don’t play.

As an off had dagger btw, a 184 MH and 203 off-hand, “really” not excited about it. It could have just as easily followed loot-spec/spec roll and given me a fist weapon or sword. It did not have to roll an off-spec dagger.

That’s fair, I guess I don’t see it as an issue since 197 is kinda low ilvl and that’s the highest random drop. For a new alt or casual that could be annoying and I can sympathize

The issue, as I didn’t successfully bring to point, is why is class loot a thing?

It shouldn’t be. We have chosen specs for a reason. We were given a loot-spec to solve the problem of off-spec. We now have no options to select what were getting, and in some cases the item is literally useless.

So not only less loot, but loot that wastes your time, and in some cases isn’t useable. Try not to focus on the rogue/dagger thing. What about prot warrior 2handed sword thing? Im sure you can come up with others.

Class loot, why? We have spec loot, and loot-spec to select as a choice. We have quests with labeled (or specific items) and can choose to pick them up or not.

I don’t need my RNG rolls to also contain any possible class spec.

Why would that be a good thing? Because I play all the specs on my chars. If my war was main prot it want a random 2 hander to make world environment faster and easier

That is what loot spec is for. If you only play Arms for example you wouldn’t want a shield.

Well yes I do because shield is useful for swapping and shield blocking in pvp/if tank dies.

I see where your coming from though

Just because YOU don’t play a different spec, doesn’t mean NOBODY plays a different spec. Would it be great if there was a way to tailor every system in the game to our specific wants? Yeah, probably. But that doesn’t exist.

I do play many classes, and multispec on those classes. I can loot for my spec being in that spec when looting or loot for an offspec by using loot-spec. I have all the methods I need. What I don’t want or understand is playing a spec choosing an loot-spec and getting items for another spec.

Example to clarify
Play prot pally your geared main with loot spec set for Ret pally to try to gear your Ret pally and get holy pally loot instead. Imagine not wanting to heal but wanting to increase your Ret pally dps, and getting healer loot.
Getting loot for a spec by choice is possible, and fine. Even an off spec is possible through loot-spec. Getting loot for any possible spec at random is the issue I’m bringing up.

From callings and many other sources you can get gear for any spec! Not your main spec or loot spec you ‘set’, but any spec.

Druid example you tank and play feral but keep getting resto and balance gear.

Because calling boxes ignore your spec and loot spec can give you any class spec loot.

Class loot (not your choice) makes no sense.

Again you can already gear your off specs by choice why are we getting loot we didn’t choose to get?

Getting off-spec gear, even if it is class usable, is very frustrating for those of us who never intend to play another spec. Loot specialization should be across the board. And have a No Specialization option if you want a chance at off-spec gear.
Even beyond that, add Weapon Specialization. Many times I have run the Same wq on both my DW Frost DK, and my Fury Warrior. The DK will get a 2h weapon, while the Warrior gets a 1h. Completely opposite of what the characters would use. Even with casters, some prefer using a staff while others want a MH/OH.
Give us the real choice of which type of weapon we want. I would rather get gold then an item “I” find useless.

i know someone necro’d this thread, but…

i just hopped on my warrior, fury spec main, took my 2h’ers off, went prot, then was able to equip a 2h weapon still.

Set your spec role and then look at dungeon/raid loot showing for the chosen spec. Daggers can be used by any rogue spec and still is functional thus they are open on all loot specs for rogue. Healers get trinkets that proc on abilities OR healing spells but not that only proc on damaging spells. If the item is still viable for your spec it is on your loot table.
