I like this idea because I think it would be very easy/cheap to make, but also very popular because it basically combines two popular classes (Paladin & Mage).
It would be a Plate armor class that can use two-handed weapons as well as shields.
It could be a 2 spec class (since those are easier to make).
1 dps spec & 1 tank spec
What’s nice about this idea is that it could just share a bunch of abilities with mage (would mage players mind this?).
There are plenty of mage spells (old and new) that would find a nice home here. And then you would fill it out with melee oriented magic spells such as;
-Fire/Frost/Arcane Slash.
-Magical Hammer.
-Phallanx Blade (Yes, I’m just taking ideas from Elden Ring)
And tank abilities such as;
-Magical shield (an active damage mitigation ability that excels against magic damage)
-Ice Armor (frost spells increase defense and apply thorns-like effect)
Maybe it could have a gravity magic theme. I’m just spit-balling here.
Do you guy’s think a class like this would be popular? And do you think mage players would be upset to share their identity with another class?
Yeah, I would love it, they even have it in the lore, one of the mage order hall companions was quite literally a blood elf spellsword, which is I heavily advocated towards it during Legion, unforunately Shaman * roughly * fullfils that niche, so I think it’s something that Blizzard won’t even touch with a 10 inch pole, unless, of course, they suddenly decide to add new specs to every class as an expansion feature, which is unlikely due to balancing issues.
I think my ideal mage-warrior class blends void or fel rather than arcane with their melee, but we have a bit the latter now in DH, even if it doesn’t feel like much of a caster in that regard.
And unfortunately the antithesis to Paladins already exists in DKs, so we’re a bit pinned in that direction as well.
Idk, it’s a fantasy that’s nebulously absent. Elements of it (pun intended) exist with Enhancement, and to some degree FDK, but it’s hard to find a good niche for something like this nowadays that won’t feel like treading old ground by half.
Maybe. But since it uses a different armor type and can equip different weapons I thought it makes more sense as its own class. And it would cover a melee arcane spec and a tank mage spec, giving mage two new specs doesn’t seem in the cards. Especially when there are other good 4th spec ideas for mage like frostfire.
Still comes off incredibly lazy to me, it’s barely different from the mage class… hell, you even have mage spells in it. If you want a new class, you gotta bring ideas that don’t already exist in game. It could easily be made into a spec and no you don’t need to change the armor type… a simple passive would take care of that.
Summon your weapons to fight for you! Summon a giant magical hammer to wield that smashes on the ground and from it a shockwave of pure magic ripples outward from it.
Armor? Magical battle armor, all of your cloth is embued with the power of silky blue magics. Their threads become stronger than plate.
Cannot wield a weapon or an offhand instead summons them to themselves.
Call upon ethereal void cannons to appear out of thin air and fire upon your foes relentlessly.
Entrance any elite in a dungeon or raid to do your bidding for the entire dungeon.
I absolutely would mind, not because I’m a mage, but because flat-out copy-pasting spells from one class to create what is essentially a mage/warrior hybrid would be the epitome of lethargy and set a bad precedent. Also, having it be two specs would not go over well with the people who are still holding out hope for a third DH spec.
Idk. There are a lot of cheaply made copy characters like mario & luigi in super smash bros. Or Ken and Ryu in street fighter. People still like those characters. The fact that they’re not unique ironically makes them unique.
I think as long as people like the class the fact that it was cheaply made is just gravy.
shaman definitely needs a tank spec. it would work so well. tank, melee, ranged and healer.
also evokers need a tank spec. it would work well also. they need to do away with aug and make a melee spec for evoker as well. with combo busters and tail swipes etc… then evoker can have tank, melee, ranged and healer.
right now druid is the only class with 4 specs. time for shaman and evoker to get as well.
