What’s a good class to suggest to someone who’s not very good at video games?
I really want to encourage this person to join me in Azeroth and Outland, but I’m just not sure what class to suggest.
Thoughts?

Hunter is always my suggestion.
And strong, once you get the handle on pet tanking.
Way more forgiving than most other choices.
Paladin or Druid.
Both offer specs for Tanking, Healer, or DPS. Which makes them good for figuring out what role you want.
Plus both are pretty tanky regardless of spec with decent utilities for “oh crap” moments (Divine Shield and Dash [retreat is a valid military tactic!]; respectively).
When you say someone not good at video games, does that mean they will settle at using subpar mechanics, or is there good faith this person might become better(ex, are they an older person who just wants to press a few buttons and can’t see good? or are they just someone new to rpgs but might want to be competitive later on?) ? If they want low input to do good I wouldn’t suggest hunter as it requires a lot of good input to kite.
Don’t suggest them a class honestly, let them enjoy the game as a class they think is cool. Paladin does have a simple kit regardless of spec though and has easy ways to make money at endgame.
Pvp wise paladin needs to be pretty good to not get rekt in the open world so its hard to suggest that class when something like mage rogue or druid can deal with the open world a lot better with disengage mechanics to run away/avoid fights. Paladins can’t run and are pretty trash when getting ganked and tend to need to hide behind something to be able to win vs classes that can kite them.
If they are younger and learning, mage hunter rogue druid, if they are older, pally, maybe warrior. Lock although being a boss in open world, requires a lot of attention to do well with, so I wouldn’t even suggest lock to a younger person but only to someone who knows what they are getting into.
Spriest is amazing for the older generation though.
Hunter prolly hardest class in the game.
It kind of depends. Hunter is probably the easiest class to pay at a mediocre level, but one of the hardest to play at an exceptional level.
Yea I agree with this.
Sure you can kill your pet every mob lol.
To play it in raiding is a lot harder than people imagine.
This isn’t retail, pets take all the damage.
A good hunter needs to keep himself alive and do mechanics and do mechanics for his pet.
My suggestion for a new player friendly class is mage. Leveling is easy. You have a lot of tools to get you out of trouble. They have a lot of utility with teleporting and free food/water. Plus, they’re not all that much harder to play at endgame than they are during leveling.
Well…for starters I would recommend anyone new to the game to not roll on a PVP server.
I, myself, rolled on a PVE server to learn how the game worked (first official MMO). Then I rerolled PVP.
((I’ll leave out my opinions of that experience.))
I introduced an ex to the game by suggesting Hunter. She loved it, but then tried Warlock and loved it more. Eventually settled on a Shadow Priest, but that was long after she was addicted.
I’d suggest Hunter or Warlock depending on their personality.
Hunter is a class I describe “easy to pick up, hard to master”
this has been true for most iterations of the game but is especially true in TBC. Anyone can spam steady shot and do high dps. It takes more skill though to kite mobs, trap effectively, not clip autos all while dealing with different levels of haste.
Do not start with paladin unless you want to be bored and quit. Not a character I would start with.
Hunter is definitely the easiest and strongest beginner class. Warlock is also not bad
I just don’t new players should pick a class that pigeon-holes them into a role. Unless, of course, they do know exactly what role they want to play.
Paladin’s also not as boring now.
…besides, might as well get your money’s worth outta that Netflix/Amazon Video/Curiosity Stream/Disney+ sub.
I don’t think it’s a good idea for a new player to tank. Tanking is the most demanding role in the game, and expecting a new player to do that, with all the community pressure that comes with it, isn’t good IMO.
Eh, it’s just to give them the option to try all 3 roles. Leveling is slogfest. Most new players will probably only want to level a ‘main’ once.
Pick the class that matches your play style… It’s ok to suck at first.
Any class.
Games brain dead easy.
IMO, the druid can be quite chaenging to play. The first 10 levels are painful. Most will roll feral, and that’s pretty boring until you hit 30 or so.
They are quite independent when it comes to gear… But the number of skills they have really requires key binds and macros to play well.
I’d go with beast mastery hunter or maybe demonology warlock. Pets go a long way in making things easier.
Druids harder to get started but easy when you get the hang of it. Addons and weakauras do most of the work.
@ OP I would recomend Mage tbh. While you may believe you suck at video games it’s honestly a very good class to get to learn the basics of the game on. A very good class for learning kiting and resource management. Also isn’t a healer or tank which can be potentially more stressful.
Hunter for sure. Easy choice.
