Class Fantasy vs Min-Max

How do you guys base your class/race pick? Class Fantasy fulfillment or Min-maxing?

1. Class Fantasy: Do you follow your gut choosing the Class that most relate to you? For example, your Class Fantasy is being a bulky Tauren Warrior in a badass looking armor, wielding a humongous 2H Axe and charging ppl all day. So no matter how Warriors performs in the game, you will always choose it. Because that Class Fantasy its what motivates you to play. You just wanna have fun. Even though your favorite in-game activity is leveling, you’ll roll Warrior because thats what feels right. *Twist: However there is a chance you could end up rerolling or quitting because you got discouraged from struggle with leveling.

2. Min-Max: Do you follow your head and pick the Class that performs the best on your favorite in-game activity? For example, your favorite thing to do in WoW is Duel. So you research a bit and find out that Mages are the best class for duels in Classic (just an example, idk whats the best class). Basically, you dont like Mage aesthetics, lore, hate cloth armors, your staff look like a tree branch, etc. You end up choosing Gnome because thats BIS for dueling Mages, even tough you dont like them. But still, you’ll roll Gnome Mage because thats the “rational choice”, 100% min-maxing. *Twist: However there is a chance you could end up rerolling or quitting because you got discouraged from playing a Class/Race that doesnt feel right to you, doesnt fit your Class Fantasy.

Tell us about your picking process and which one of these two applies to you.

Both.

Only play things that are aesthetically pleasing but consider min-max when choosing my race/class combo.

I’ve always gone with what I like so I guess I would be a class fantasy player. I’ve never been a super hardcore raider or anything like that so I don’t see a huge point in min-maxing for slightly better dps (or whatever benefit min-maxing would have.) I want to roll what I think looks good without caring about the stats, personally. I play to have fun and that just isn’t fun to me. No hate on those who do enjoy min-maxing, though :slight_smile: To each their own.

More class fantasy over min max. All the races and classes have their strong and weak points in the game if you play to them. I toy with all the races and classes, but I’m only serious about humans and dwarves as they were my favorite in the many years I played D&D, in the way that their races were described to behave resonates best with me.

I don’t feel like there is much class fantasy in the game these days, but my decision is often mostly based on aesthetics and simply rotation feel for class.

I have a ton of characters I created from like a cool character perspective, like a Troll Rogue called Griftah, an Orc named Mulverick etc. But ultimately since I didn’t like their aesthetic for the classes at the time I just never played them after max level.

Liking what they look like, or relating to the character goes a long way towards making characters playable to me.

Every male orc I have leveled has been left at some point. Be it max or in between 1 and max. I just can’t do the hunch. So any orc I do now will be female.

I feel ya. It’s my one huge worry with Classic. My guild and IRL friends are going Horde, yet personally I would rather go Alliance.

90% of armour looks terrible on both Troll and Undead, and I’ve never persevered with an orc.
I never play female (can’t relate to them in terms of immersion).
So I’m pretty much stuck with Tauren who have very limited class options.
Or suck it up and go Orc so I can go Rogue or something.

Min max in Vanilla i think is pretty irrelevant.

More important to try and get 40 people on and working together rather than a raid trying to squeeze the extra 0.5% you get from being a race that does more dps etc.

I played a Tauren male hunter in vanilla, i like cows.

But this time around ill be Tauren female warrior or Orc female warrior Why? so im a bit different

I can do Tauren males but that’s it on horde. Any other horde race and I’m going female. Love my Orc females though so its all good. Even better, I am going ally for classic so I don’t have to worry about that anyways.

I would suggest trying an Orc female on the stress test or anyway you can before classic to see if you can do it. I mean they’re ugly enough you think they’re a dude.

You forgot about druids. We just pick our faction, usually what our friends are playing on.

Racials > Aesthetics > Class fantasy for me.

It’s not so bad on Horde because I like Orc and Undead but for Alliance…RIP

Warrior/Rogue/Mage/Lock are Gnome
Pally and Priest are Dwarf

At Least Druid and Hunter get to be Nelf… :frowning:

Ewww do you even remember the old Tauren Cat form? That thing is an abomination on the senses.

Literally the whole reason I just can’t see myself playing Druid in Classic.

I just play whatever I want.

After hearing all of these stories of guilds in Naxx poaching tanks and other members, I don’t think when you get to end game you’re going to have much of a choice.

If some Night Elf warrior shows up to raids with consumables and can fill all the requirements, you’ll take them.

With original vanilla I was solely going by 1 because I wasn’t even aware the game would be so stupidly balanced at max level to the point I’d get shunned from groups.

This time around, I’m going solely based on 2.

You can do both.

There are folks with multiple of the same class, such as a holy priest for raiding with their raid-focused guild, and who have a shadow priest they use in world pvp and battlegrounds.
Usually guilds let players bring their alts once they’ve acquired BiS from the raid for their mains and the raid is being farmed.

To be honest you could replace my character model with a green circle for all I care.

It’s just a walking stat stick.

I’m all about the Fantasy. I don’t care about what numbers I put up. I’ve tried the min/max route before, and my enjoyment of the game was lessened.

Hope nobody from my thread jumps in here to quash all you fantasy enthusiasts.
