Class Buttons Ranked

Hello, I was wondering if anybody could tell me how many buttons are used by each DPS class and each DPS spec in order from most to least, including numbers. I used to play Marksmanship, but I heard we are getting button bloat for Shadowlands, so I switched to BM. But I honestly dislike the lack of AOE compared to the insane AOE Hunters had in WoD, and the rotation seems slow. So with this lack of AOE, I might switch classes, but I prefer few buttons for convenience.

Ehh for pvp my rogue has about 40-50 “buttons” around the same with my Surv hunter.

are you talking like base rotation minus long cd’s, or everything together?

Base rotations, and all together separately.

It would depend on your talent choices. I used to get overwhelmed with MM too, but that was because I had selected a Murder of Crows, Explosive Shot, Double Tap, and Piercing Shot, which left me with 11 combat buttons (except some were only used for single target and some were only used for AoE, like you would never cast Multi-Shot against only one target). Now, my ST and AoE rotations are only 5-7 buttons depending on my essence and level 90 talent.

If you like MM, you should play it! It’s kind of like a ranged Assassination Rogue - I think it is cool and fun.

Marks hunters I only see in pvp, must be the easiest damage spec.

Warlocks have a lot. Getting like five more in SL.

I don’t think any class compares to rogue, though I could be wrong.

You should try playing ptr first. There’s barely any “new” buttons and killshot being added to the rotation didn’t feel like bloat to me.

Depending on talent tree you can get Frost mage base rotation down to 4 buttons: Frostbolt, Ice Lance, Flurry, Frozen Orb - of which Frozen Orb has a 60 second cooldown so you’ll be basically using the other 3 most of the time.

ok then! It really depends on the class and the meta, but the average rotation for most classes sits at 4-5 buttons (including anything under 30 second CD) without talents. That being said a lot of classes use tons of talents in their rotation, which makes the difficulty of the rotation really depend on personal preference.

From my experience of Mage the general average for all three specs is a 4-button rotation in single target. Both arcane and fire add 2-3 abilities from the talents to play optimally (Rune of Power, Meteor, Charged up), so Frost is really the only one not very effected by talent choice, since Glacial Spike is really the only good added ability they get and isn’t mandatory.

That being said both Arcane and Fire are definitely effected by their openers and burst rotation. For fire for instance, their burst rotation adds 2 trinket activations, 1 essence, and 1 activated item. Their base rotations are pretty easy, but that’s really not where the damage is for either spec. I think if you are ok with casters, you may find Frost Mage pretty fun and definitely good for AoE, but as a caster the rotation is definitely slow.

DH is one button

i would strongly consider waiting and seeing. if they only add a few buttons, the difficulty of learning a new spec is often much higher than just adding a few buttons to your rotation or learning a few extra cds. if you find yourself having trouble, the way i learn the extended toolset for most specs is by starting off with just the essentials and binding and learning a new ability every few days (once i feel comfortable with the previous one).

Enh Shaman is 4 self buffs (3 with 30min+ duration so don’t need recast, 1 that need recast every 2 min or on movement) then 6 button “base” rotation (including 1 debuff to manage, possibly over multiple targets) plus 5 more active damage buttons that can be added thru talents, and 2 dps cooldowns (3 counting Lust)… and maelstrom procs can change what button you should be pressing at any given moment.

Until tuning is done tho the optimized build/rotation is still up in the air, but will probably fall in the 6-8 button range

Keyboard 1-4 = garrote, mutalate, toxic blade, rupture

E: kidney shot
R: blood of the enemy

Mouse: DPI + blind, DPI - poisoned knife, 1 cloak, 2 vendetta, 3 Fan of Knives, 4 stealth, 5 sprint, 6 fient, 7 shadowstep, 8 kick, 9 Opie trinkets/macros/etc, 10 evasion, 11 vanish, 12 map.

…what?

I use 2… Aimed shot and Feign death. That’s all I need.

U wot mate.

For my toons this has been my experience:

Assassin Rogue and Havoc DH: about 4-ish buttons, pretty easy rotation

Frost Mage and Fury Warrior: about 5-6 buttons, a little more complicated rotation but still not difficult to learn

Unholy DK: lots of buttons and very complicated rotation. I still don’t feel I’ve mastered this class yet
