Right now it’s 1250 soul ash for rank 1, 2000 for rank 2.
So if I craft a rank 1 legendary, will it cost 750 soul ash to upgrade to rank 2? Or will it cost the full 2000 soul ash?
The reason I’m asking is this-- IF upgrading doesn’t recognize the base amount of ash already used, then it seems like the lower rank legendaries will just be a waste of soul ash and players should save their ash for one more week and craft a rank 3 legendary (if they can afford/craft the shadowghast). Otherwise, if it recognizes the soul ash previously spent and lowers the cost of the upgrade accordingly, it makes sense to start at rank 1 or 2 and upgrade when you get the shadowghast piece.
Anyone who can firmly state how this works? Also, I’m a bit baffled by how legendaries work right now because it really seems like people who are rich (real money for tokens or in-game gold) can just buy a super powerful legendary item super early in the expansion. This is pretty much my definition of paying to win so I’m wondering just what the hell is going on with Blizzard right now, haha.
Definitely interested in the soul ash part of your question. I was just thinking about this a few mins ago myself.
The pay-to-win thing though - don’t you still have to find your legendary power yourself. You cant buy it. only the base item which have fallen in price significantly over the past week.
I’m pretty sure you can upgrade as many ranks as you want, but you still have to pay the difference in soul ash. So going from rank 1 to 3 will cost the same amount of soul ash as upgrading from rank 1 to 2, and then 2 to 3… however, you would save gold since you wouldn’t have to buy the rank 2 material gear (i.e. shadowghast for plate wearers).
That said, if I’m wrong about this someone please correct me.
You can go from Rank 1 to Rank 3 yes. You just add the upgrade cost from 1 to 2 and from 2 to 3 together. So to go from Rank 1 to Rank 3 costs 1950 Soul Ash, and to go from Rank 1 to Rank 4 costs 3900.
i think his question might (and if not, mine does) have been more aimed at “can you upgrade from 1 to 3 without buying a rank 2 base item?” The answer im assuming is No. the soul ash spent long term is going to be the same, and im assuming im going to have to fork over a B.S. amount of gold to go from rank 2 to 4 since ill have to purchase both a rank 3 and rank 4 base item, instead of being able to save soul ash for a week and skipping from 2 to 4 directly. and creating a new 235rank4 legendary would be a waste of 2 ranks worth of soul ash since your not upgrading it.

You can upgrade from 1 to 3, 1 to 4, 1 to 2 to 3 to 4, the ones you want. It will cost the same soul ash but you have to buy/craft the legendary base for every upgrade you want, so if you want 1 to 4 you have to have the rank 1 and rank 4, if you want from 1 to 3 to 4, rank 1, 3 and 4 legendary bases.
So if you have already made your Rank 1 legendary and want to upgrade to level 3 you just need to buy the Rank 3 armor piece if you want to upgrade from 1 to 4 you just need to buy the Rank 4 Armor piece you dont need to buy each level. Plus the needed amount of soul ash to make the upgrade.
Going from rank 1 (ilvl 190) to rank 3 (ilvl 225) cost me 1750 soul ash for my bracers, not sure why people are saying it costs 1950, unless its item specific
I bought a rank 2 piece of gear from the AH. Without using a rank one piece, I could use it right away at a cost of 2000 Ash. So looking at this, if I wanted to save up the Ash and just buy one rank 4 piece of gear, I could attach the legendary move to it and only buy the 1 piece of gear.
