Hey guys I’ve been leveling my
mage stacking a lot of intellect, currently just hit 234 at level 39.
I was just wondering is this a good point to start stacking spell damage (+?? To frost damage, “increase damage by ? Magical effect” gear). Yesterday I had gotten a +19 frost damage boots compared to my +6 int +5 spirit boots I was pulling 20 damage more on frost bolt. It seems only logical due to the fact I use 80% frost spells that I should be looking to prioritize this over intellect? Any clarification on the subject is much appreciated
It’s a balancing act. You want to get some +dmg if you can, but sometimes it’s not worth losing a lot of stats.
I’ll always take a bigger mana pool, a higher spell crit% and faster mana regen over more direct damage of a single damage type.
It probably even out for the DPS, but you have other spells you’ll be using too and there’s the mana downtime in between to consider.

As to when its worth starting to try to get SP of some sort…
Level 60.
That doesn’t mean all the items you will use will be level 60 items (for instance, for warlocks who aren’t Destro, the best ring until T2 is Underworld Band, a level 38 Epic BoE) but it isnt really worth trying to juggle items for spell power until you get to 60. Just grab “of the Eagle” items or items that have int/stam in some ratio on them while leveling.
Thatll do you fine until 60.
So i was just think about this today: I maybe way off but I am thinking just on damage values alone (approximately):
8 Int = 1 Spell Power = 0.13 Crit = 0.08 Hit
at-least that is how I understand it
It does not give hit at all.
Only + spell hit gives hit.
Nor does it give damage (unless Mages have a talent that converts into into SP that im not aware of).
Int gives mana and spell crit.
not saying it gives hit I am saying its equivalent in damage: meaning a damage increase so hit means you hit more theretofore more damage overall.
Generally you upgrade your item when you find an item with a higher level…aka item budget.
But it all comes down to play style IMO. A guy who aoes will need more stam and int pool.Whereas a guy whose attacking single mobs will benefit from spell dmg a lot more while leveling.
Spirit early on is an extremely important stat. However as time goes on and you become higher level, the effectiveness is clearly diminished. Besides it’s kinda pointless when you can evocate /mana gems.
You want exactly as much mana such that you end the fight at zero mana, and the rest goes in spellpower.
Int does not increase spl dmg.
Int increases mana and crit.
I always go for spl dmg over int.
Always, always, always take spell dmg/frost dmg over literally anything else. My mage is 45 and almost exclusively wearing spell/frost gear. She kills most things before they ever reach her, even single target (as an AoE spec).
Health is almost useless on a mage. You die when you go oom, and if you die before that you did something very wrong.
Spirit barely matters. The regen it gives is negligible.
Intellect gives mana, but even with only a piece or two granting intellect (in addition to spellpower) my mage can fight three mobs back to back single target before needing to evocate/drink, and can also complete an AoE grind pull without needing to use gem/orb/pot/evocate. The extra mana intellect grants isn’t really all that necessary. Int does grant spell crit too, but it’s hard to really quantify that with classic’s UI. For a frost mage AoE grinding… blizzard doesn’t crit.
