Except it… didn’t? People have been walking into capital cities solo since vanilla. Guards are typically somewhat threatening at the start of an expansion and an absolute joke at the end. Note that “somewhat threatening” doesn’t usually last long, oft times not even until the end of the first content cycle.
The guards have never been a threat. Maybe you’re thinking of pre-patch periods, where they’re normally scaled to the upcoming expansion? S’about the only time they’ve ever really stopped anybody.
People have been killing the AH npcs for years. Blizzard would generally tell you that a PvP problem has a PvP solution, which would be to get a bunch of people together to kill someone, and keep doing it until they get bored and leave.
As far the Event is concerned, it isn’t a capital or a Sanctuary, warmode is enabled and you risk death. Its been that way for ages - I remember back in MoP how there were benefits to being in PvP mode on Timeless Isle. If you want the rewards, you take the risk.
Maybe. Or maybe kill the guy yourself? A compromise would be generous because I don’t think any changes are necessary. I use WM for the exp buff too, and I know when it’s time to turn it off.
They have and you’re just being cynical about it. From booty bay bruisers to royal guards, they used to pin down and beat the crap out of enemy players.
Only the dumb ones. Those guards aren’t normally dangerous individually. It’s when you’ve made a series of poor decisions resulting in a large number of them on you at once you’ll have a problem.
Booty Bay is neutral unless you choose to put yourself into a mode to kill them in order to gain the opposite reputation, which is generally for the Insane title. Royal Guards are in a faction city and sure, they could probably do with some beefing up, but then its probably not one of Blizzard’s priorities.
Rogues have been mercing known Quest NPCs, Auctioneers etc for a long time. In MOP iirc some people would even wipe out the enemy factions’ PVP gear vendors over and over lmao. In BC we’d routinely Wipeout small towns just to grief. With WM off none of that is viable, and there’s a guide on WowHead I believe that can get you to 85 percent boosted zp right now, with WM off its still 75 and less headache.
There was an incident on one of the RP servers - Moon Guard, I think - where the Horde killed all Alliance auctioneers and quest NPCs in all major cities at once. I heard they even camped out there for almost an entire day before the GMs did something about it. That must’ve been close to a decade ago now.
I remember a bunch of us from places like Illidan rolling lowbies on that server to roast their Alliance in trade while their cities got sacked. Don’t remember how we found out about it.
man, I ‘grew up’ on this toon on an RPPVP server - VeCo, '09 to '17 - and stuff like that was just a calling card for some skirmish. I was usually getting zooked, but that was part of the excitement!
Ya’ll are missing the point // too complacent about asking for good changes. Imagine you’re just chilling on your alt in SW waiting in queue and just ran a 200 item TSM post queue - then bam some tanky glad comes in dancing around the fountain area killing all NPCs and alts, then flies off freely and does it again in 5 minutes. The guards pose no threat even at the beginning of xpacs these days. Also when you die in a city your ghost can’t fly for some reason - so it’s a silly situation that should be remediated. I don’t know if you guys are the ones who enjoy ganking NPCs and alts for hours on end or just trolling. And suggesting I toggle WM on/off each time I enter a city to enter “safespace” shard is stupid. The point is even in a PVP context, the guard NPCs are far too useless than they used to be, now more than ever.
And then think about the recent Anniversary event. WM is mandatory for XP boost - I’m just chilling there for Mount Mania and get nuked and have to walk back from the caverns and miss out on the event. Ze goggles (guards), zey do nothing!

I think making uber-guards defeats the purpose of a player vs. player environment. I understand the frustration - been there done that for almost a decade - but it’s player vs. player, not player vs. guards.
This is LITERALLY what Warmode is all about. This happened 24/7 back when PVP servers were a thing. Criers like yourself ruined it to where PvP servers no longer exist. The 10% buff is ONLY there because you are risking getting ganked to have it.
I see you have not played on the old school PvP Servers. Guards are there as an Obstacle for the PvPers. They are NOT there to stop it. They are an additional obstacle you need to plan your attacks around.
This is all World PvP in a nut shell and 100% WHY WARMODE EXIST. Dont like it? TURN OFF WARMODE
You act like this hasn’t happened to us. We do what we suggested you do. Disable pvp flagging and go back to other things. The game is vast and they give you the option to not deal with this. You’re choosing not to take it for a meager xp boost when plenty other boosts are available right now. You don’t want discussion, you want your subjective view catered to. No dev team in the world is going to do that for people who ignore available options to avoid their issues. Sorry.
