So, granted this is 15 year old memories… I remember chests out in the world very often having a green item, like almost always. Maybe not the very beginner ones in starter zones, but certainly once you get to level 20-30+ zones.
I have looted probably 50 or so chests myself and gotten potions, food, and maybe a gray item if I was lucky. Probably 3 or 4 chests or so had a green and it was always something like a shadowgem or a pattern.
Does anybody else remember chests being glorified food crates? I don’t even know if I should bother opening them at this point. I really remember them always having some decent loot back in the day.
I mean a Chest spawned in 20 minutes 3 times at the same spot in a furbolg camp in ashenvale also don’t know if that’s supposed how they work.
I wonder if they boosted spawn rates and made the loot trash to compensate for all the players?
I haven’t seen much items of use from chests yet, or rares.
But I’m leveling a small army of alts together, so everything I’ve gone for is level 15 or under, so that may have something to do with it.
Yeah, I’ve looted a fair bit in zones like duskwood and hillsbrad, which I feel always had greens or maybe even blues back in the day.
I recall chests in classic being mostly white / grey / crafting with only the occasional RNG green.
But i have trouble remembering last month, let alone 15y ago… so…
Maybe, I’d really love a blue post to chime in because I really remember always being excited for chests back then. Now it’s like, meh I know there is just 2 cheese and a piece of leather in there…
I’m too old now to properly remember back in the day.
But I do feel a vague disappointment every time I open one to find some food/drink, some vendor trash, and maybe a white quality item.

I don’t remember ever getting a rare item from a chest. Played back during version 1.1 to 1.4ish.
I specifically remember getting rares on several occasions. And frequently a green item.
Don’t remember the version but it was before BC.
