Chatframe.lua error

I am getting an LUA error periodically. It seems to only happen when I get in combat, but I am not 100% sure.

The LUA error is as follows:

Message: Interface\FrameXML\ChatFrame.lua:1077: bad argument #1 to ‘strlower’ (string expected, got no value)
Time: Thu Dec 13 19:22:02 2018
Count: 3
Stack: Interface\FrameXML\ChatFrame.lua:1077: bad argument #1 to ‘strlower’ (string expected, got no value)
[C]: in function `strlower’
Interface\FrameXML\ChatFrame.lua:1077: in function <Interface\FrameXML\ChatFrame.lua:1072>

Locals: (*temporary) = “string expected, got no value”

So far I have tried:

  • Disable all addons
  • Delete WTF, CACHE and Interface folders
  • Reset all Chat Defaults and Reset Chat Positions
  • Delete All custom chat windows
  • Uninstall and reinstall World Of Warcraft via the Battlenet application and delete the folders that were left behind.

I am pretty much out of ideas, and I have no idea what is causing this error. Any help is very appreciated.

Heya Toliakin,

If this persists past a UI reset, it probably means there’s a left behind lua or console variable messing with your chat. Are you running any addon managers? (Twitch/wowmatrix/tukui client/etcetc) If so, let’s uninstall those and try resetting the UI again. Once that’s done, type this into your chat box, press enter, and see if it fixes.

/console cvar_default

If it does, make sure to log out safely so it accepts the changes. You may get some notifications that you don’t have permission to perform the function, but the important bits should be run nonetheless.

I have the same issue. I used to have lua errors occasionally, mostly with the “talking head” (e.g. starting the Make Loh Go quests), but now I get them randomly just attacking things. I tried the advice you gave, but the errors still happen. I use no addons. Any other ideas for solutions? Why are these errors happening?

That looks like it fixed the issue. Thank you very much!

After I posted, I closed the game again and switched to playing my warrior for a while. The lua errors have not come back, even back on my mage. I have had the annoyance of having to set UI settings the way I want again (and finding how to set things like map fade that aren’t in the settings anymore) but that’s worth it Thank you for the help Drakuloth!

Appreciate the follow up from you all. If anybody else has an issue which the steps above don’t fix, I’d recommend starting your own thread or contacting customer support.

This has been dogging me for a while now, and I figured it was probably just a certain boss mod messing around with me for not updating hourly. The console command fixed it though -thanks!
