there was an add-on that gave you a list of your previous chats with players. It made it far easier to see who you had talked to previously, in case you want to to them again. It was a small box with a list of names that were easily clickable to re-chat with them.
That add-on died years ago. Is there a similar one currently available via Curseforge?

The only chat addons I know of are Prat, Chatter and Elephant. I assume the one you’re talking about is Elephant.
Prat has a feature where when you log in, it’ll keep the chat log from the previous time you had been online up to the limit of the chat box, so you can see who you had been whispering last time prior to logging off. Chatter I think has something similar, though I’m unsure.
I didn’t know Elephant died though. That’s kind of depressing. I know a lot of RP’ers who used to use it.
Look up WoW Messenger. I cannot remember for sure if it had the feature you are wanting but I feel like it did.
WoW instant messenger or WIM might be what you’re looking for as it has chat history by character. What you’re describing could have been something like cellular but I’m not sure.
As others said - WIM. You can look at previous chats
