So, the Character Update feature has been an excellent feature since it’s been added. Though, I have stopped using it currently for a few reasons. When you use the feature, you lose your UI settings. Like the action and home city. Whilst some people might like this reset during a character update. I am sure there are many who would not. Especially if they have multiple alternatives and have to redo an action bar on multiple characters. For me, I do not understand why (yes, I know it may be simpler in computer coding) these are touched, when it’s called a ‘gear update’, not a ‘character update’. As of yet, I have to do another character. So, I do not know if this has been rectified in the latest update. However, if has not. I hope the following solutions will be implemented in the future. Either - or the action bars and home cities are left alone when performing such an update on a ‘character’ (yes, reference to ‘gear update’ again) or give the option on the screen when the update is about to begin, so such things are left alone, and said aforementioned ‘gear’ is the only that is only thing updated - thus being in the nature of what is truly specified on the screen. Hopefully, with these suggestions, like a lot of new features, which are good, they become even better by listening to feedback from players not only from the PTR servers, but live servers as well. Which in turn helps you deliver a better product overall for the whole player base. So, with that in mind, hopefully you will make the gear update, which was a great idea and implementation, an even better addition to the game with some tweaking and the possibility of adding the ideas I have suggested.
Still not really sure who the gear update feature is aimed at.
The ilvl is dogwater and it’s specifically for leveling characters where gear just doesn’t matter at all to begin with.
Like, being away from the game for awhile does not make your character weaker so what is the purpose of this?
I kinda get the UI wipes and stuff to generate a clean slate for a returning player. That’s probably more the intent than for a player who’s constantly subbed to get a minor gear upgrade on an alt they’ve ignored for too long.
But the namesake of the feature just feels pointless?
I think it only really benefits characters with grandfathered gear from the previous squish.
If you had a part-levelling or mostly levelled character BfA and earlier and never logged into it, you could potentially find yourself with a level 46 character with ~40-60 ilvl gear to which the catchup would be better.
I don’t see any other circumstance in which using it would benefit the player.
I usually just use heirlooms until I hit current content.
I think when I tried that gear update thing it gave me WAY worse gear than my heirlooms were, lol.
So yeah…not sure who this is working out for
Yeah to me, that’s a huge kick in the butt why i don’t use it.
“Hey there guy! i know you’ve meretriciously set up your Ui settings, so imma clear them and just vomit abilities all over your action bars!”
It definitely does make your character weaker to be gone. I hadn’t played this character since mid MoP, and was in full pvp gear pretty much + elite weapon, but with the level and stat squish all my gear was ilvl 30 something at lvl 32, which was much lower ilvl than what even a green at that level is scaled to. Made the character feel awful to play until I got some gear. It really makes a huge difference.
Unfortunately I also goofed up my chance to use the character update feature on most characters since I logged onto them to look at them, which in turn made them ineligible for the gear update. So I think it’s a system that has a use and works if you don’t accidentally lose out.
This update is for people coming back after a certain timeframe, numerous squishes, and what not that likely have really bad gear for their level and quests that are ancient today.
You may not use it; however, I have used it once or twice (until like I said the hemorrhage of the UI - like the action bars) to save time with alts. Especially since, there is minimal value between using heirlooms between 60-70 and the gear that they give you. As I don’t play as much as I use too, but still do play. However, this is tempered by my medical conditions. Whereas, sure the gear update may be directed at people coming back, though, unintentionally, target people like me. That can’t keep up with the games progression like they use too on all their characters. My intention in writing the post wasn’t to find out who was using and who wasn’t. The intention was, as I had used it, and was planning more than likely in the future, to get blizzard to notice some improvements they could make. To make it’s intended use easier in the future.
many of my characters have been wearing grandfathered items.
the gear they were wearing had its item level changed.
…making the items red, and are essentially an empty slot.
it’s nice to be given replacement gear.
i’m sure some people want to jump back in with a different spec, so it doesn’t hurt that they have a weapon they can use straight away.
even the bags were an upgrade for some of my less played toons.

I get a lua error trying to use it.
I found it to be completely useless.
