I am trying to restore a character on the Moon Guard Realm Alliance and it won’t restore. I have restored other characters on the same faction and realm with no problem as well as other realms both alliance and horde with ease. This is the only character I cannot restore. It does not seem to be realm exclusive as others are experiencing this across different realms.
When I click the restore this character button it pauses slightly, acts like it worked and goes to the character select screen, and then I get an error that reads as follows:
There was a problem restoring your deleted character. Please try again later.
I am seeing from other posts, the comments below, and feedback on the forums that this is a common issue with no solution currently. A GM has answered and said that it is a known issue that is being worked on. No date given for a fix.
PLEASE COMMENT BELOW ANY INFO YOU CAN GIVE IF YOU HAVE SIMILAR ISSUES
Attempted fixes and troubleshooting list:
- Restarted Battle net and the game. [Did not solve error]
- Reinstalled Battle net, verification, & repaired World of Warcraft. [Did not solve error]
- Checked to see if I was on the correct realm. [Did not solve error]
- Error wether or not the name is taken. I currently have a character for that name, so it is not taken during this process. (tested with and without) [Did not solve error]
- I have attempted at different times and different days and made sure I was fully logged out before trying to restore the character. [Did not solve error]
- Restored ALL characters on the correct realm and faction except the one that is giving me the error and then tried to restore said character. [Did not solve error]
- Attempted to restore the character at different places/ranks on the list of restorable characters. [Did not solve error]

Is it possible that the name is taken? I’ve run into the same issue on different servers, and when I researched it, that came back as a possible conflict. Not sure what they can/will do about it, though, but here’s hoping something can be done.
One of the items on the list of things in this post I tried was I checked if the name was taken. The green check is shown in the name section at the character creation screen so I confirmed it was not taken, and then I attempted the restoration on the correct server to no avail. I then created the character with said name and then tried to restore the character [anyways with a flagged name change] and it didn’t work either.
Both ways did not work.

I am also seeing this issue with two characters I tried to restore on Moon Guard, one Alliance and one Horde. Are other servers seeing this or is it just MG?

Having this issue on Sargeras as well. I was able to restore one character on the server, but not the other. Seems to be random characters, not related to server or faction?

My issue is the same but on the Illidan server.

Well, hmm. Here’s another question: mine that I cannot restore are the 4th and 5th characters on my list of deleted characters. Is everyone finding them to be in the same place on their list or is this also random?

Tested your theory and moved the character in question to different places on the list as well as restored ALL other characters except that one and neither worked and it did not prevent an error when I went to restore the character. Added it to problem solving list. Not saying it won’t work for others but worth a shot!
My own personal strange ‘conspiracy’ theory is that in the Emerald Dream zone when you /sleep you are taken out of your body, and you can walk around in an “out of body” state. I remember logging out of that character in it, and then deleted the character.
Wouldn’t that be something.
I’m wondering if it has something to do with the ‘gear update’ option that characters that hadn’t been played in a while had? The one that I have been trying to restore for the last couple days hadn’t been played in a while and probably still had the gear update option. It is a lvl 52 rogue. Any chance? Other than that, I have no idea why this character in particular can’t be restored. Maybe when rogues go poof it’s poof for good?
Edit: It doesn’t appear to be the gear update, I restored another character that still had a gear update available. Also doesn’t appear to be the name taken (even though it wasn’t) I tried to restore a character whose name was taken and it restored fine, just had the prompt to change it’s name at first log in.) Other than this one being a rogue… I have no idea what is different or off about this one character. She’s parked in Org… not like she’s off somewhere funny. I’m stumped. But hoping we will hear something eventually. I went ahead and just started leveling another rogue. I imagine I’ll have her to the same level before we find out anything.
It might be the number of characters that are on the deleted list or I seen some people say characters with alt codes in the names having trouble been restored too.
I think this could possibly be the common denominator. My character in question is a level 36 Druid that definitely had the “Character Gear Update” option still pending prior to being deleted.
Positioning in the list seems to have no bearing on the ability to restore.

I restored a character with the character gear upgrade option as well with no issues.

GM’s will just give you a recap of the rules for undelete instead of reading your ticket. At least for me, they did. Waited 3 days for automated answer. Hopefully they will fix this soon. I am in the same boat with my character, and I tried all of your fixes.
Thank you for the info! Can rule this out at least…
Actually had a GM respond to my ticket this morning. They said it was a known issue being looked into. No specifics. Just to keep trying as when it is fixed, there may not be any notification.
