Character Customisations Part One: Demon Hunter Eye & Tattoo Colours

For years I’ve prattled on to any who were excited to listen, of small quality of life changes I would see implemented to make the game more enjoyable in subtle ways. Moving away from Balancing Classes and Raids. Away from PvP and Mythic+. And back the the basics of what this game has been striving to become but ever wavering. A place of immersion and fantasy.

Role-Players, Mog Collectors, and Aesthetic Appreciators have all long been swept under the rug, having to scrounge and cobble together under the pitiful level of customization we’ve received over two decades of WoW’s existence. Now true, some is more than none. But when it comes to the simplest aspect of treating the player-base, why not keep more options flowing more regularly? Small options that make sense, options that fix broken and half-baked customization, options that allow us to expand and feel a semblance of deeper connection, and more solidified fantasy with our characters.

Namely, for the purposes of this post, I bring attention to the Demon Hunter. An Aesthetically pleasing but ultimately unfinished catalogue of customization options. Issues like there being Red, Purple, Green and Faded Black Tattoo options, and yet when it comes to your eyes, it’s Fel Green or coverings.

Not only that, but regardless of your color choice when it comes to the tattoos, your Havoc or Vengeance forms default to Fel Green regardless. It’s something that has irked me from day one of creating my Demon Hunter back in Legion Pre-Patch.

Addendum;
I have written this after painstakingly working on mock-up images, depicting all the customization options I have discussed today, only to then learn that I cannot post them here, because rather than punish the guilty, the innocent must jump through hoops for the right to upload images to their own forum posts.

Apparently the best option I have available to me is to link the images using Reddit:

A lot more customisation freedom needs to happen in WoW. Long overdue. Not to mention other games (cough cough WoW’s direct competitor that people flocked to after Blizz’s walk of shame) do customisation so much better.

So I agree that things need to change with character freedom of expression. You’d think this company would care about such things.

I agree that expanding character customization, on a more frequent basis, is indeed long overdue, and I for one have been grateful for the amounts that we’ve received. Though part of the reason it’s dramatic enough to be a Patch Banner Feature, is that it barely ever happens. Therefore it is simultaneously major news, as well as underwhelming news.

We’re getting more added soon, what with the Worgen Battle-Scar Fur Skins and such. But to hearken to a direct fact, there are options in game already, or options that are but a few days dedication, and we’d have an expansive amount of player freedom of expression, and fantasy fulfillment at our character creating fingertips.

I worked late hours for two days to figure out and mock up the gallery posted in the above Reddit Link. I know it’s not always easy to do, however I’m no professional, I just had the passion to see before me, with my own eyes, a sight I’ve wanted to behold for years. Simple as it may be.

I hope that somehow, these examples, come to fruition. Likely not exactly as I have shown, but these were only meant to evoke thought, and hopefully one day action.

Thank you, for your comment.

It’s nice we’re getting more stuff these days. Took quite sometime just to add a few additional options. If they had started sooner, we would’ve had a lot more after so many years.

DH justification for not allowing the red eyes baffles me. Why would green glowy blind eyes be ok but not red glowy blind eyes?

My wish list for DH is:

  • A dreadlord Meta, like Kin’tessa.
  • Being able to customize color in Meta, like skin color, horns and tattoos. Perhaps armor too? (Like Dracs)
  • Customization that would make Meta look a lot like Ysera (corrupted by the nightmare). Basically, a reddish meta.
  • Another one for a “DH that has been cleansed by Elune”. Bluish and pale, moon symbols, etc.

Of course, I’d also like a playstyle that allows me to sit on Meta. Something that turns Meta into a “druid form” of sorts and morphs skills, adding some ranged spells would be nice.

I 100% agree with everything you said except on the topic of DH. Their biggest problem is that you have to be an elf to play one.

I concur with several of your points, and have always been confused by the lack of sense when it came to the Demon Hunter’s Eye Color Limitations, as well as Death Knights.
Hence this post’s purpose.

And I have discussed as well, my desires for a rework of Demon Hunter that opts for less burst, more consistent DPS Talents, that allow us to toggle an indefinite transformation into our respective Havoc or Vengeance forms. Fun for gameplay, and brilliant for Role Players.

As per your wish for a Dreadlord Form, as well as ranged spells or skills, why not combine the two, and amalgamate all of these desires into a 3rd Spec for Demon Hunter?

Havoc (Melee DPS), Vengence (Tank), and Desolation (Ranged DPS)

People have always exclaimed that Ranged DPS Demon Hunter is just a Destro Warlock. But if you use your imagination, I can see this “Desolation” Spec having a Dreadlord Form, and casting various demonic curses such as the Carrion Plague upon our enemies. As well as some good old Fel Fire, Nether Flame. Perhaps as Dreadlords, we could even borrow a page from Sire Denathrius’ book, and utilise telekinesis to slash our enemies from afar with our glaives.

Asking for character customisation and eye color options is one thing however, asking for another new Spec is something else entirely. And while I love the idea, and admire the enthusiasm, I won’t hold my breath for too long waiting for Blizzard to take heed of such requests as that.

Thank you very much for engaging with the discussion.

Dhs definitely need some attention. It’s in a poor state right now and it hasn’t gotten that much better since the class was added back in Legion. Kinda clunky, kinda cheap in terms of skills and talent choices and only two specs, which restrict things even more. I think it’s fair to ask for a 3rd spec and some attention, considering we’re behind other classes.

We both had the same idea for another spec. I posted one a couple weeks ago for a third spec.

It’s basically a dreadlord spec, DPS mixed with support heal based on leeches, some stealth and fear utility and Carrion Swarm functioning as its Eye Beam.

Hmm, this is interesting.
I like the influence of Carrion Swarm for Eye Beam, just as Vengence has its Fel Devastation, so to should “Desolation” (Dreadlord) have it’s own flavor in that ability.

My only notes, are that while Xavius was a Satyr and mostly, if not completely remade into a Demonic being. The Nightmare itself is a corruption of Druidic Magics, and more so tied to the Old Gods, not to the Burning Legion, or Demons as a whole. “” While Yogg-Saron was the Old God who opened the Emerald Dream to its brethren, N’Zoth later became the one who took the most active role in its corruption.“”

His power only coming from the Emerald Nightmare once his aspirations led him to the Old God’s power. Being Demon Hunters it’s fair to ask for Chaos Fire (Red) in our abilities, as well as more sanguineous, and vampiric abilities when speaking to absorbing the energies of Dreadlords for our “Desolation” Spec. I personally don’t see it being on brand having direct Old God influenced abilities, but I suppose it’s a “Purist” sort of take.

That being said, I love the imagination and thought put behind the idea!

I tend to stay within the realms of Cosmetic and Aesthetic hopes and changes, but have posts in the works regarding some of my more involved aspirations as well, such as small Questlines and Class/Spec Ideas. Would love to have you theory-craft on there too!

All in all, I agree that Demon Hunters are one of the more neglected, unfortunately the list of neglected Classes and Races is also long.

I believe that comes with the territory and thought process that making new things often, will bring new customers. When the desperate need for new customers would be dramatically less so, if they’d take care of the needs and nostalgia of older and more veteran players more frequently. Which in Dragonflight, I see may be more prevalent!
