Character boosting history?

so the topic came up in guild regarding character boosts in bcc, it seems to be a point of contention with many but i’m sitting here thinking… wasn’t that something people could do when bc WAS retail? i could swear that when bc launched there were endless memes about how bad boosted players were and how horrid the gear they were given was and how much people hated pvping on the side of people who did it… i wonder what the history of paid character boosts was like, i seem to recall in bc there was the 58 boost, that there was a 68 boost when wrath launched, maybe i’m misremembering some of it.

Boost were MoP…

Well, I guess technically it was WoD but it was the prepatch or something like that.

I want to say it was WoD that started the boosting to max level. They had a little cinematic of a depressed gnome getting a boost.

I could be wrong.

Unless you mean carry boosting. That has been around since the beginning

I think they mean the service:

And yes OP, you are def remembering wrong.

That might be the Alpha test for Boosting. I think they were known as eBay Players.

it was MoP in retail, yeah. pre-WoD being released.

Character level boosts started with the WoD preorder in MoP. Though, the RAF system in TBC made leveling alts extremely, extremely easy and there were level boosts as a component of those (every two levels the recruited account did, they could boost a level on the referrers account).

There was also the scroll of resurrection in Wrath, which was sort of a prototype for the boosts we have now. They allowed a returning player to boost to high or max level and have a basic set of gear. Maybe that is what you are thinking of?

Oh yeah I completely forgot about the SoR and the fact it gave a boost. I just did it for the mount.

(Which means I’m the one not remembering correctly. Sorry OP)

Wasn’t there one in Cata? I vaguely remember an add that showed a little gnome running through Uldum.
Or was it at the end of Cata?

Getting old sucks for remembering.

Omg you ain’t lying. I can’t remember crap anymore.

The one for $60 was end of MoP for WoD.
Bluster pointed out the one from Scrolls of Resurrection in Wrath.
I don’t remember anything from Cata.

There was also the Recruit-a-Friend boost. When I started playing the friend who got me into the game played with me on a new toon and got huge amounts of levelling from doing that. He pretty well boosted it from one to cap and I recall all the flash-bang happening as he went up in jumps of 10 levels at a time.

That was back in Wrath, btw. Not sure if it still happens.

Yeah that was fun but you didn’t get any gear from that, which is partly what the OP was asking about.

Yeah, the only form of “boosting” that was available during TBC was buying characters/accounts from sites like eBay, and if you were found to have done it or even suspected of it, you’d be given endless crap. It carried a heavy stigma, especially in PvP circles.

very late reply, but yes, it absolutely was the scroll of resurrection that i was remembering, because i absolutely remember people getting their character level set to level 58 with the same garbage gear that the Classic BC boosties started with and everybody laughed back then at just how absolutely awful that gear was.
