Since we know that layering is going to be a thing now and that we won’t have as many tools as Retail, we’ll likely have to use the old-fashioned chat channels (General, Trade, etc.) to get things done.
Although they haven’t said either way, I’m hoping that all layers will have access to the same channels and that everything is pooled together? Obviously, this will make World ridiculously busy, but communicating via General between layers to see if there is a Quest mob alive will become part of the norm.
This likely could be extended to being pulled into another layer to check on things like Black Lotus spawns and what not, so it’ll be interesting to know how this could affect gameplay.
Thanks.
They have to. Otherwise layering is DOA.

I believe there will be a world channel, so I’m gonna go with a yes for now.
Even if there isn’t a World channel, people will create it and join it at login (if they come from less reputable versions). I’m not as worried about the broader channels that cover the entire layer, but the smaller ones per zone (General).
Will they have channels work between layers on things like World, Trade, but give different rules to General chat to keep things compartmentalized? Again, I hope not because the goal would be to keep things connected and not apart, but again this will have some gameplay consequences and I can only wonder which way they will go.
It would be nice to know for sure either way.
On one hand I say it’s obvious they’d be connected between layers but on the other hand…if I’m a server with 3 layers that are supposedly going to be 3k players, eith an even 50/50 H/A split, thats 4.5k players spamming into one general, trade, world etc
Edit to add: It would obviously settle down though as time goes on and players spread out between zones but man I can just picture the Barrens chat moving so fast you won’t be able to read one question before 100 other people ask something else.
Currently on retail the way it works with sharding and crz in place /1 has a large group of, if not all realms linked to one chat and /2 is your local realm only. (not sure on /3 as I don’t use it) Given the reasons for them wanting layering in classic and it (allegedly) being short term, I imagine that /1 AND /2 will be linked across layers as it’s really all one population once everything settles down anyway. That’s just speculation on my part though.
Typically in Retail with sharding, General Zone chat is your shard/layer only, Trade chat is global but only in cities, LFG chat is global as well and available everywhere.
